Also, what was the trail of immigration in 1887 traveling from a small village like Sowina through Poland and onto Hamburg, Germany and Liverpool, England and finally to The United States? I have not been able to find information on the Internet concerning such a trek and at that period of time. Any help there please.

They went on foot and/or horse and wagon to their destination (sometimes they had to walk for many days). The advent of railroad trains as a mode of transportation made it easier to get to the seaports, but not all emigrants could afford to pay the fare.
Two interesting links on this subject:

My first time on a forum, please bear with me. My Grandparents were both born in Sowina, Galicia. My Grandfather Jan Kopec born 24 July 1866 with his Father listed as Maciej Kopec and Mother as Mary Tutrow. My Grandmother Maryanna Bronowicz born 26 March 1878 or 1880 with her Father being Sybastien Bronowicz and Mother a Mary...
Jan Kopec left Poland and entered the U.S. 29 June 1887 and moved to Pittsburgh, PA.
I would like to have some help in tracking down the Church that they would have attended in Sowina and if I would be better served in trying to find their Birth Records in Sowina Parish or try Rzeszow State Archives. The name Kopec seems to be prevelant enough in Poland but ....
So I am starting from scratch and slowly gaining good information with a few roadblocks. I would truly like some help with getting information from Sowina and Rzeszow. Thank You.

Hello Hutchman,

I too just recently joined this forum. My maternal grandfather, Tomasz (b. 1893 or 4) is also a Kopec (Kopic), but came from the village of Malawa, PL (about 6 mi. E of Rzsezow). He did settled in Johnstown, near Pittsburgh, PA. He also did have an older brother named John (Jan) but, who supposedly died in Poland when my grandpa was little, before he came to the U.S. So, the name John and the immigrant destination of PA is common enough and likely only coincidence between our searches, given that the birthplaces of our grandfathers are both known, are both different, and relatively far from one another (I understand the village of Sowina is about 24 miles SW of Rzsezow).

However, all this said, I want to pass along some other information I came across while researching my Grandfather's surname: First of all, today, while surfing the web, in doing such research, in my notes, I wanted to locate Sowina, because of an article I had in my files relating to this village. So, I "googled" the name and came to the entry listing of all the links to articles, websites, etc. containing the name Sowina; the first link I clicked took me right to this-- your PolishOrigins entry/inquiry!

When I read your entry, I started thinking that the person mentioned in the article I had, MIGHT be somehow related to your specific Kopec family line (I kept this article even though I didn't think the person discussed was related to my line). So,here is the link to that article, which discussed one "Anna Kopec", who with her husband, Stanislaw, lived on a farm in the village of Sowina, in 1940. She is honored on the website of the "Jewish Foundation for the Righteous", for her herioic actions, with her husband, Stanislaw, of hiding and rescuing a Jewish family from sure death by the hands of the Nazis. You can read the rest of this article at this link:

http://www.jfr.org/site/PageServer?pagename=sup_kopec

The fact that she is a Kopec from Sowina, makes it likely that somehow she is a relation to your family.

I know this wasn't any answer to the specific questions you have posted about your grandparents, etc., nevertheless, as you gather geneological information of your Kopec line, I thought you would want to know about and perhaps later investigate this story further.

Good luck,
Thanks much for all this information. Lots all at one time. I will definitely follow-up on the addresses for diocese records. I checked out the Krakow to Hamburg video and it was quite interesting. Must go to the Main Library here for the New York Times and verify ship on the date in question.

                                      Hello thehutchman,

1/2 pint provided you with a bunch of useful information.

The simplified version of the church address of the very old parish in Bieździedza (set up in 1320 and the first mention about the village comes from 1105!) is:

Bieździedza 20
38-214 Bieździedza

and the rector of the parish is Henryk Zachara.

Here you can find photographs of this beautiful church: http://pl.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Plik:Biezdziedza_kosciol.JPG&filetimestamp=20060618170635 and here its rectory: in http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Biezdziedza-dom-parafialny.jpg .

Civil records are held the gmina (community archives) but only up to they are 100 years old, no more.

Because there are no records in the State Archives the only possibility is that the books are kept either locally in parish (which is most common in this region of Poland) or were moved to Diocese Archives in Rzeszow or in Przemysl. It would require direct contact with them either by e-mail or by phone.

Here are the websites with contact details:
- Rzeszow Diocese Archives: http://www.diecezja.rzeszow.pl/?q=node/2147 and
- Przemyśl Diocese http://www.przemyska.pl/

There is a great video about the way emigrants from Eastern Europe had to do and the drudgery they had to experience to get to the New World. The video is produced by New Moon Productions and was originally published on the website www.hamburg.de . My first time on a forum, please bear with me. My Grandparents were both born in Sowina, Galicia. My Grandfather Jan Kopec born 24 July 1866 with his Father listed as Maciej Kopec and Mother as Mary Tutrow. My Grandmother Maryanna Bronowicz born 26 March 1878 or 1880 with her Father being Sybastien Bronowicz and Mother a Mary.

Jan Kopec left Poland and entered the U.S. 29 June 1887 and moved to Pittsburgh, PA.. I cannot find my Grandmother's entry to the U.S..
I would like to have some help in tracking down the Church that they would have attended in Sowina and if I would be better served in trying to find their Birth Records in Sowina Parish or try Rzeszow State Archives. The name Kopec seems to be prevelant enough in Poland but Bronowicz is difficult to find anywhere in the Country.

My Grandfather's Naturalization papers indicate that he left from the Port of Hamburg and also Liverpool. The ships name is not clearly visible to read correctly. I have tried Ships List and various other websites and I am having difficulty nailing down ship arrivals to the Port of New York on the 29th of June 1887. Was there a particular newspaper that would have printed Ship Arrivals on a daily basis at that time? Also, what was the trail of immigration in 1887 traveling from a small village like Sowina through Poland and onto Hamburg, Germany and Liverpool, England and finally to The United States? I have not been able to find information on the Internet concerning such a trek and at that period of time. Any help there please.

My Grandfather and Grandmother died in 1925 and 1930 respectively and my Mother was the last of 8 children when she was born in 1923. With her being orphaned very little genealogy history is available. Her death was in 1973. So I am starting from scratch and slowly gaining good information with a few roadblocks. I would truly like some help with getting information from Sowina and Rzeszow. Thank You.
