I was asked by e-mail by descendant of Tomaszek and Barabasz about meaning of surnames of his grandparents who lived in the end of 19th century in Krakow and Zywiec areas.

Tomaszek from first name Tomasz Thomas. First name known in Poland since 12th century in two forms Tomasz and Toma. It derives from Aramaic t'oma, "twin". In written sources the surname Tomaszek appeares in 1685.

According to national database from 2002, there were 3847 people by the surname Tomaszek living in Poland and most (about 620) lived in Żywiec area.

Barabasz biblical name Barabbas Aramaic, "father's son".

According to national database from 2002, there were 1923 people by the surname Barabasz living in Poland and most (about 120) lived again, in Żywiec area.
