I looked up both Śmitkowski and Łabiński (the masculine form for Łabińska) here:

Śmitkowski - od niemieckiego Schmied ‘kowal’, od niemieckich nazw osobowych Schmied, Schmid(t). The name is from the German “Schmied,” which means blacksmith.

Łabiński - - prawdopodobnie od staropolskiego łaba, łabaj ‘wyzwisko; też o wielkim psie’. My understanding of Polish is not good enough to translate this one. Maybe someone else can help.

You probably already checked the moikrewni website, but if not, the distribution of the surname Śmitkowski:

as well as the distribution of the surname Łabiński:

Neither name is currently used by many people.

Origins of names Smitkowski and Labinski

I'm doing a little work to help a friend discover his Polish Roots. He gave me the surnames of his grand parents as Smitkowski and Labinska. From looking at a few databases, it appears the spellings might have been Śmitkowski and Labińska or Łabinska or Łabińska.

I would appreciate learning anything about these names and what opinions are about the original spellings.
