Post subject: Austrian Military Records Galicia Poland 1800s
Is there one repository in Poland for Austrian military records of the 1800s?
I am looking for those of my great great grandfather Michał Franciszek Pogonowski, who was born in 1826 in Święcany. Given his birthplace, he might have enlisted in Jasło. According to family memory, he was in the army for 12 years in Kraków, or possibly Oświęcim (Auschwitz). About 1845-57.
The Family History Library in Salt Lake City has informed me that old Austrian military records have all been turned over to the respective countries of the former Empire. Where are these records in Poland?

Even Experts of the former southeastern Polish area do not know what heppened to
these records. Austria says they were turned over but there is no specific Polish archive
that has the records. Maybe they are in Lwow (Lviv as it is presently known). Lwow was the
repository for the myriad of the records, including cadastral maps of the different villages and
there is a lot that is not yet known. _________________ kurpie21

kurpie21,
Good to know I'm not the only one frustrated about these military records.
I know the villages of my ancestors back to before 1800. Have you ever found a cadastral map of a village?

http://newsgroups.derkeiler.com/Archive/Soc/soc.genealogy.jewish/2012-02/msg00136.html | Quote: | Thus I was very surprised by Alex Feller's post on November 26, 2011, which
is as follows.
"The Family History Library has microfilms of military records for various
towns in Galicia from the period of 1865- 1930. The originals are located
in fond 780 at the Central State Historical Archives in Lviv, Ukraine. The
link to this record group on the FHL website is
<https>
http://tinyurl.com/7sydd2c [MOD]
I found the above note from Alex encouraging and have investigated the 8 films
in the collection that is listed as corresponding to surnames beginning with
the letter F.
Here are my general conclusions:
(1) The film notes do not indicate what is covered by each film.
(2) Each film is organized in labeled sections, i.e. the labels are contained
on the film.
(3) Each labeled section is organized into unlabeled subsections corresponding
to the birth year of the conscript.
(4) Within these unlabeled subsections, the surnames are listed mostly
alphabetically.
(5) There may be multiple subsections for the same birth year scattered among
the films, sometimes these subsections adjoin.
(6) There does not appear to be any obvious order to the birth years.
(7) There are many WWI records.
(8 ) There are quite a few records out of place. There are even a few records
with surnames starting with letters other than F.
(9) The military records are heterogeneous and include at least the following:
Auskunftsbogen
Auszug aus dem Belebungsprotokolle
Dienstzettel
Entlassungsschein
Fehlkarte = faulty card
Grundbuchblatt
Haupt-Grundbuchblatt
Konduiteliste
Kopfzettel
Landsturmevidenzblatt
Landsturmlegitimationsblatt
Persons- und MeldeNachweis
Schussblatt
Stammblatt
Strafprotokoll-Auszug
Testimonium mortis
Todten-schein
Unterabteilungs-Grundbuchblatt
Vormerkblatt
Vormerkblatt fur die Qualifikationsbeschreibung
Vormerkblatt uber Kranke in Heilanstatten
The following is specific information on the 8 films for surnames beginning
with F. Except where stated otherwise, all the subsections correspond to
surnames beginning with the letter F. Each subsection corresponds to a
particular birth year within which the surnames are arranged more or less
alphabetically. These subsections vary in length from just a few records to
many dozens. |

Thank you, Henryk.
I wonder though about the years before 1865.
My great great grandfather would have served about 1845-57.

I have just started using the Cadastral maps. some are located in Przemysl,
but the majorityare located in Lwow (Lwiw) as it is presently known. They offer
much to the researchers satisfaction, enabling you to find out what parcels of
land an individual owned. They are priceless. Particularly important is a listing of all the individuals who own land in the village. _________________ kurpie21

Poganowski,
I read somewhere that the Archives of Poles who served in the Austro-Hungarian Army during the time of Galicia are still located in Vienna. I know a good Czech database that you can search for Surnames of any relatives during WWI that where Injured, Captured of Killed. You may find that if you had any relatives still in any locations at this time you didn't know had served or not, you may be supprised.

To: Cenowski - as my message to you is still sitting in my Inbox, I'll repeat it here: Hi, I've just read your comment regarding finding Poles on some Austro-Hungarian database. I'm intrigued because I have not had any success locating such a database. I have been looking for a commander in a (Polish?) unit in the A-H army: Florian Krasowski, who at the collapse of the A-H empire stayed in or entered Ukrainia (Rohatyn) and reinvented himself as a civilian. He was Polish from, I'm told, Belarus territory (whatever the borders were pre-1900s) and after 18 years he appeared in the mining town of Yenekieve near Donetsk and Horlivka. He was arrested several times by Bolsheviks and finally died at their hands in 1937. Because the Ukraine/Russian archives say they do not have information on his demise, I'm stuck. Therefore I have to look for his army service record. I've had no luck with the archives in Warsaw. Do you have any suggestions? Regards, Terese (Australia)

Sorry, just got an email to say there was a reply in the thread. I hadnt seen my messesges for some time. I will will take a look through the database when im at home later on, however the database only deals with those who were wounded, imprisoned or killed. I have heard that one of the Military Archives has some information on all recruits but i havnt got this far in my own research yet to see what is availible. As for the records in the current boardrrs of what is ukraine and belarus, i wouldnt expect any co-operation from them when it comes to paperwork or answers.

Thank you. You are correct - nothing in Polish archives, nil reponse from Belarus, Ukraine and Russia regarding service record of any kind. Have been writing since 2004 for army, navy and border guard info in respect of other relatives.
I should be obliged for anything that might open up in the future as a thread for research.
