If your ancestors are from Odrowąż near Czarny Dunajec and Nowy Targ (Lesser Poland), be sure to add your information to the Places Database at: http://polishorigins.com/places You can also add your family surnames to the Surname Database: http://polishorigins.com/surnames

There are several villages named Odrowąż in Poland. This one is in the Podhale region of southern Poland. I have also seen it written as Odrowąż Podhalański. Odrowąż has a population of about 900 people and is part of Gmina Czarny Dunajec, in Nowy Targ county, in Malopolskie (Lesser Poland). Odrowaz is about 39 miles (63 km) south of Krakow, and about 4 miles (7 km) north of Czarny Dunajec.

In July 2009, I went on a Forefathers Traces Tour with Zenon. Zenon allowed me to start a blog before and during my trip. If you would like to read it from the beginning, click here: http://blog.polishorigins.com/2009/06/11/shellies-family-history-and-tour-to-ancestral-places/
If you would like to skip the part about my background and start with my arrival in Poland, click here:
http://blog.polishorigins.com/2009/07/12/11-shellies-tour-to-ancestral-places-day1/

Click this link to hear how to pronounce Odrowąż in Polish. http://www.ivona.com/en/?tk=7mNMI7BRBc

When I started to research my family history, I had a hard time finding anything about Odrowąż so I am inviting others with an interest in this village to join me here for discussions about the village and family research.

Some surnames from Odrowaz:

Parish: Parafia św. Marii Magdaleny. There is some information about the parish on the Krakow Diocese webpage: http://www.diecezja.pl/pl/parafie/599-odrow-podhalaski-parafia-w-marii-magdaleny
The parish church, built between 1825-1831, was consecrated in 1832. Before then, I believe that the Czarny Dunajec church served this village. The Latter Day Saints do not have microfilm records of this church.

Hello Shellie,

There is a Franciszek Habas listed on the memorial. This could possibly be a brother to my grandfather. Do you know what the heading on the memorial says and what ROL after his name refers to?

Heading in Polish reads: "Sprawiedliwości wołamy" which means "We call for justice".

From the the description next to other surnames (for example Literat - "Writer") I am guessing that it says about profession or rank in the army. In this case ROL most probably means Polish "rolnik" - "farmer".

Shellie,
I found another connection of my Banska Rol ancestors to Odrowaz: Jozef Rol, born 1902 in Banska, the oldest son of Bartlomiej Rol and Bronislawa Kulach, married Helena Czop from Odrowaz in 1930. This is all I know. Do you have any information on a Czop family in Odrowaz at this time?
Thanks, - Ute

Hi Ute!
I couldn't really find any Czop families. I think that the Czop family was originally from another village.... possibly Dzial?

Maciej Gal of Odrowaz was married to Zofia Czop (daughter of Michal Czop). They had a son Jan Gal in 1827.

I think this family is from Dzial: Agnieszka Czop married to Kazimierz Landowski (no date available) They had a daughter Franciszka - my guess is that she was born in the 1880's.

I hope that this helps!

Hi Shellie,
thanks for taking the time to look for Czop families in Odrowaz for me. I just discovered that I made a mistake saying that Jozef Rol from Banska married Helena Czop FROM Odrowaz in 1930. I checked the information I had on Jozef Rol again and it said that he married Helena Czop IN Odrowaz. It seems that only the marriage took place in Odrowaz in 1930. Why in Odrowaz I don't know, Jozef was from Banska, but perhaps they had relatives in Odrowaz sponsering the wedding, and Helena Czop was from another village. I'll see if I can find out more, I'm curious now. Thank you again!
Ute

Hi Shellie,
I've recently found extensive records of my ancestors from my mother's house (she is 94), that was done by a cousin. My last name is Gall, although variations in our family records are "Gal" which seems original and "Gaul". My family originates in Odrowaz. Surnames in my family are the following: Gal, Garb, Lysy, Dusza, Kocanda, Kapusciarz, Kosla, Bielanska, Komperda, Karwaczka, Poczatek.

On the Gal side - my Great-Grandfather was Jan Gal, my Great-Grandmother was Antonina Dusza. Jan and Antonina had 10 Gal children in Odrowaz - Michal, Helena, Felicja, Jozef, Martina, Roza, Michal, Anna, Jan Kanty and Franciszek (my Grandfather). Jan Gal's parents were Ignacy Gal and Regina Kapusciarz. Antonina's parents were Mathias Dusza and Agnes Kocanda.

On the Garb side - my Great-Grandfather was Jakub Garb, of Odrowaz, my Great-Grandmother was Mary Kosla (from Pilzno, Poland) - they had 6 children here in the US in Chicago and then Sobieski Wisconsin (Sophie, my Grandmother, Vincent, Bernard, Joseph, Stanley and Eva). Jakub's parents from Odrowaz were Andrzej Garb (his parents were Franciszek Garb and Regina Lysy) and Regina Karwaczka (they had 5 children, Wojciech, Franciszek, Magdalena, Jakub, and Jozefa) and Mary's parents were Andrew Kosla and Sophie Poczatek. Strangely, Regina Karwaczka who would be my Great-Great Grandmother GARB was widowed from a first husband named Andrzej GAL!!! We are trying to see if there were any children from this marriage which was in 1856. I was always told that my Grandfather Gal's family were close friends with the Garb family in Odrowaz and he later married Sophie Garb here in Chicago.

If there are any relatives in the Chicago area or if anybody reads this and thinks they might be related to me I would love to hear from you. My cousin in California acquired most of the information that I have.

Also looking for any relatives in Poland! All of the information above is from my father's side. I do have contact with relatives in Poland from my mother's side in Plock.

Wow Unclegregg! What a treasure you have found! [note: images of the census were added in later postings to this thread.]

I would love to hear more from you about the family history that you found at your mother's. How far back does it go? Did it include any photos, letters or certificates (birth, death, marriage, etc).

my great-grandmother Aneila Kadlub was the daughter of Wojciech Kadlub and Jozefa Gal. Jozefa Gal was born in Odrowaz in 1851. Her father was Wojciech Gal. They lived in house 94. Her paternal grandparents were Stanislaw Gal and Catherine Gwidz. Jozefa's mother was Anna Gal. Her maternal grandparents were Thomas Gal and Zofia Bleka.

I am very excited to meet another person whose family is from Odrowaz. I look forward to hearing more!

Hi Gregg,
Hope you are enjoying your new computer. Thanks for the reply. I visited your website and your martini bar is really nice. I recently found that I have some cousins in Chicago and when I come to visit them, I'll stop by and have a drink!

[update: 03 FEB 2010]: Uncle Gregg's Census info is for the Gal family only. It did not have any names of my ancestors Confused However, I deeply appreciate hearing from Uncle Gregg and his generous offer to share information!
[update: Nov 2010: images of the census records have been posted further down in this thread]

I'm adding some photos of my guest house in Odrowaz and the view from my window, taken during my Forefathers Traces Tour with Zenon in July 2009. Enjoy!

Uncle Gregg, I live very near your bar in Chicago but have never been. I have a small group of people who I have met who are also researching their families and we have been trying to arrange a get-together. Maybe there are others in the Chicago area who are also interested and this could be a fun evening of finding long lost relatives? Are there any others on this board who would be interested in a "Polish Ancestry Night" at Uncle Gregg's Blue Water Lounge? If this is imposing on you Uncle Gregg please let me know.

If you only organize the "Polish Ancestry Night" you have to show us pictures (and maybe videos) here Very Happy Exclamation

It is too bad that I live so far from Chicago Smile.

I'm here in Atlanta all bummed out that your Polish ancestry group is up there in Chicago! Wish I could be there!

Can you tell me if any people in your group are researching their ancestors from my part of Poland - Podhale area, around Odrowaz, near Czarny Dunajec?

I'm adding a few photos of Odrowaz, taken in July 2009 during my Forefathers Traces Tour with Zenon - isn't it beautiful? Click on each photo for a larger view.
