This is the story of my maternal great-grandfather, Konstanty Osiecki. For many years his story, and the stories of those who came before him, was a mystery. Many members of the Osiecki family, myself included, tried to put the pieces of the puzzle together, without success.

This past summer I was fortunate enough to make contact with a wonderful lady whose family came from the same area of Galicia as the Osieckis. She was more than willing to share with me birth, marriage and death records she obtained via the Church of Latter Day Saints. (The records are in Latin and I have, for the most part, listed the information here as it was written on the records.) Within these records is a lot of information that for many, many years eluded our family. I would like to share this story, hoping that it in some way might help others with their own research.

I'll begin with a timeline of the life of Anna (Osiecka) Zagura, Konstanty Osiecki's mother. All of the following events, to the best of my knowledge, occurred in Luslawice, Galicia, Poland.

Anna Osiecka was born on December 19, 1847 to Franciscus and Marianna (Kokosza) Osiecki. Her godparents were Thomas Kokosza and Anna Osiecka.

Marianna (Kokosza) Osiecka (Anna's mother) died on January 19, 1864. Anna would have just celebrated her 17th birthday.

Constantinus Franciscus (Konstanty) Osiecki was born on February 8, 1870, the illegitimate son of Anna Osiecka. His godparents were Franciscus Zgorniak(spelling?) and Anna & Franciscus Osiecki. This part of the story remains a mystery. We do not know the identity of Konstanty's biological father. The story passed down from his children is that Anna, his mother, worked as a servant for an aristocratic family in Luslawice. Konstanty was allegedly told by his mother that he could "hold his head up high, as he had noble blood." Fact? Fiction? I have no way of answering that question. (It would be nice if one day we could fill in that missing part of our family tree!)

Anna Osiecka married Josephus Zagora on September 4, 1870.

Shortly after Anna's marriage her father, Franciscus Osiecki, age 55, died on October 4, 1870 of some form of fever.

Joannes Zagora, born May 18 or 19, 1872, son of Josephus Zagora and Anna (Osiecka) Zagora, died on June 27, 1878 of phrenitis.

Antonius Zagora was born on May 29, 1875 to Josephus Zagora and Anna (Osiecka) Zagora.

Antonius Zagora, son of Josephus Zagora and Anna (Osiecka) Zagora, died of convulsions on June 22, 1875 at one month old.

Ignacy Zagora, son of Josephus Zagora and Anna (Osiecka) Zagora, was born on January 27, 1879.

Anna (Osiecka) Zagora, wife of Josephus Zagora, died of tuberculosis/consumption/pneumonia on February 27, 1883. She was only 35-years-old.

This is Anna (Osiecka) Zagora's story, sad as it is. It's pretty amazing that we can retrieve this much information from Church records.

Part 2 of this story will follow shortly.

Here's another installment with regard to the Osieckis of Luslawice and Konczyska. There are many different names along with the Osiecki name. Hopefully, my research will be helpful to someone who is reading this.

For decades the Osieckis lived in House #36, Luslawice. I received many records with regard to this house. Listed below are the first half of those records.

By way of background, Konstanty Osiecki was born to Anna Osiecka. Anna was the child of Franciscus Osiecki and Marianna Kokosza Drazek Kurczab Osiecka. Marianna was married to Martinus Drazek, then Blasius Kurczab, and finally Franciscus Osiecki. Marianna, born about 1805, was a child of Antoni Kokosza and Marianna Michalikowna.

The Church records are recorded in Latin. The spelling of some of the last names are as I interpreted them. I denoted "sp?" where the spelling is in question.

HOUSE # 36, LUSLAWICE

1825 Marriage Martinus Drazek(sp?) to Marianna Kokosza, daughter of Antoni Kokosza and Marianna Michalikowsna. I have no record of this marriage. I assume that Martinus died, although I don't know that for certain.

1833 Birth Adalbertus Kurczab, son of Blasius Kurczab and Marianna Kokosza Drazek Kurczab. Marianna was the daughter of Antoni Kokosza and Marianna Michalikowsna. Again, I have no record of when Marianna married Blasius.

1836 Marriage Jacobus Pr______niko to Catharina Ko____________. (The handwriting was scribbled.) It's unknown if this couple is related to the Kokoszas, but they were married at House #36.

1838 Death Thecla Kurczab, daughter of Blasius Kurczab and Marianna Kokosza Drazek Kurczab. I don't have Thecla's birth record, but she was approx. 1-1/2 years old when she died.

1838 Death Mathius Kokosza, illegitimate son of Victoria Kokosza. Unknown how they were related to Marianna, but Mathius died in House #36.

1843 Deaths Martinus, Adalbertus and Antonius, sons of Blasius Kurczab and Marianna Kokosza Drazek Kurczab. All three boys died of illness in the same month.

1845 Death Agnes Kokosza, illegitimate daughter of Victoria Kokosza.

1846 Death Blasius Kurczab, age 46, husband of Marianna Kokosza Drazek Kurczab. He died in July.

1847 Marriage Franciscus Osiecki to Marianna Kokosza Drazek Kurczab. The marriage took place in January. He was approx. 32 and she was approx. 40.

1847 Birth Anna Osiecka (Konstanty's mother), daughter of Franciscus Osiecki and Marianna Kokosza Drazek Kurczab Osiecka. Anna was born on December 19.

1854 Death Franciscus son of Mathais Zi__ba and Victoria Strzetci (sp?) Zi__ba. Unknown if they were related to the Osieckis, but Franciscus died in House #36.

1855 Death Unknown Person This is a bit of a mystery. Written distinctly in Latin are words to the effect that the deceased was an unknown person. This person was female, about 35 years old. I went on one of the ancestry forums and asked what this means. I was told that it might mean that perhaps this person was passing through the area and was involved in some type of accident. That's certainly a possibility.

1864 Death Marianna Kokosza Drazek Kurczab Osiecka, wife of Franciscus Osiecki. She died in January. She was listed as 60 years old.

1864 Marriage Franciscus Osiecki, widower of Marianna Kokosza Drazek Kurczab Osiecki, and Marianna Malinowska. They married in June. He was approx. 49 and she was approx. 26.

1865 Birth Teresia Osiecka, daughter of Franciscus Osiecki and Marianna Malinowska Osiecka.

1865 Death Teresia Osiecka, daughter of Franciscus Osiecki and Marianna Malinowska Osiecka.

1867 Death Joannes Osiecki, son of Franciscus Osiecki and Marianna Malinowska Osiecka. I don't have his birth record, but he died in January and appears to have been about 5 months old.

1868 Birth Josephus Osiecki, son of Franciscus Osiecki and Marianna Malinowska Osiecka. He was born in February. Although I'm not certain, it's possible that Josephus lived until 1945.

1869 Birth Catharina Osiecka, daughter of Franciscus Osiecki and Marianna Malinowska Osiecka.

1869 Deaths Marianna Malinowska Osiecka and Catharina Osiecka, wife and daughter of Franciscus Osiecki. Mother and daughter died in childbirth on December 9.

1870 Birth Constantinus Franciscus Osiecki (Konstanty), illegitimate son of Anna Osiecka. His date of birth was noted as February 8.

This by no means is a complete account of the births/marriages/deaths that occurred in House #36 between 1825 and 1870. It's quite possible that there are many more records; I just don't have access to them.

I'll be forwarding a list of the records that I have from 1870 to 1907 shortly.

This is the second half of the records that I have for House #36. I ended the last post regarding House #36 with the birth of my great-grandfather Osiecki in 1870. This part takes us through 1907, where records that I have regarding this house ends.

HOUSE#36, LUSLAWICE

(Again, the names are spelled as they are on the records I took them from. If I'm unsure of the spelling, it is marked as such.)

1870 Death Franciscus Osiecki, about 55-years-old, widower of Marianna (Kokosza) (Drazek) (Kurczab) Osiecka (who died 1864), and Marianna (Malinowska) Osiecka (who died 1869). Franciscus and Marianna (the one who died in 1864) were Grandpa Osiecki's mother's parents.

1871 Birth Michael, son of Adalbertus Muszkiew__ and Sophia (Lopatka/Lopalka - sp?) Muskiew_____. At this point, I have no idea what the connection might've been between this family and the Osieckis.

1872 Birth Joannes Zagora, son of Josephus Zagora and Anna (Osiecka) Zagora.

1874 Birth Antonius Zagora, son of Josephus Zagora and Anna (Osiecka) Zagora.

1875 Death Antonius Zagora, son of Josephus Zagora and Anna (Osiecka) Zagora.

1878 Death Joannes Zagora, son of Josephus Zagora and Anna (Osiecka) Zagora.

1879 Birth Ignatius Zagora, son of Josephus Zagora and Anna (Osiecka) Zagora. This is Ignacy, the half-brother Grandpa Osiecki followed to America. Ignacy settled with his wife and children in Uxbridge, MA.

1883 Death Anna (Osiecka) Zagura, wife of Josephus Zagura (mother of Konstanty, Ignacy, and the above mentioned sons who died.) Anna died in February. She was approximately 35 years old.

1883 Marriage Josephus Zagora, widower of Anna (Osiecka) Zagora, to Marianna Thomalazyk(sp?). They married in April.

1886 Marriage Antonius _____________ and Elisabetha Sliwa. Unknown their relationship to the Osieckis.

1897 Death Josephus Zagora, widower of Anna (Osiecka) Zagora, husband of Marianna (Thomalazyk-sp?) Zagora. Josephus was Grandpa Osiecki's step-father.

1898 Birth Veronica Osiecka, daughter of Constantinus Osiecki and Maria (Nowak) Osiecka.

1898 Death Veronica Osiecka , daughter of Constantinus Osiecki and Mariae (Nowak) Osiecka.

1899 Birth Anna Osiecka, daughter of Constantinus Osiecki and Maria (Nowak) Osiecka.

1901 Birth Honorata Osiecka, daughter of Constantinus Osiecki and Maria (Nowak) Osiecka.

1903 Birth Joannes Ladislaus Osiecki, son of Constanty Osiecki and Maria (Nowak) Osiecka.

1904 Birth Franciscus Joseph Olszewski, son of Aegidius Olszewski and Maria Kurik/Kwiek(sp?) Olszewska. Their relationship to the Osieckis is unknown.

1905 Birth Stanislawa Victoria Osiecka, daughter of Constantinus Osiecki and Maria (Nowak) Osiecka. I don't have Stanislawa's death record, but from a notation on the birth record it looks like she died in 1909.

1907 Birth Hedvigis Osiecka, daughter of Constantinus Osiecki and Maria (Nowak) Osiecka. This is the last record I have for the Osieckis while residing at House #36, Luslawice.

I'm unsure who lived in House #36 after my great-grandparents Osiecki moved out. I still have records that I haven't even looked at yet. Should I find out what happened to this house that was in the Osiecki family for such a long time, I'll be sure to post it.

NOTE: On some records it's "Zagura", while on other records it's "Zagora". I'm not sure which is correct.

Here's the story of the Osieckis' and Zaguras' emigration to this country. It happened in stages beginning in 1906 when my great-grandfather Konstanty Osiecki's half brother, Ignacy Zagura, came to the United States, and ended in 1913 when my great-grandmother Maria Nowak Osiecka and the six children born in Poland came here. I took this information off the Ellis Island website. The names are spelled as they were listed on the ship manifests.

Here are the details:

Ignacy Zagova Ethnicity - Austria, Galicy, Polish. Last place of residence - Konczyska, Galicy, Polish. Occupation - farm laborer. Destination - Massachusetts. Joined his brother-in-law (name unintelligible) in Massachusetts. Sailed on SS Bremen out of Bremen on Sept. 22, 1906, arriving at Ellis Island on Oct. 2, 1906.

Konstanty Osiecki Ethnicity - Austria, Galicy, Polish. Last place of residence - Konczyska, Galicy, Austria. Occupation - farm laborer. Next of kin in Poland - Marya Osiecka of Konczyska. Destination - Rhode Island. Joining half brother Ignacy Zagura in Rhode Island. Sailed on Kronprinzessin Cecilie out of Bremen on May 4, 1909, arriving at Ellis Island on May 11, 1909.

Konstanty Osiecki Ethnicity - Austria, Polish. Last place of residence - Konsyski, Austria. Occupation - laborer. Next of kin in Poland - wife Marya Osiecka. Destination - Massachusetts. Joining his half-brother Ignacy Zagura. Place of birth - Luslawice. Height - 5'4", dark complexion, brown hair, brown eyes. Sailed on SS Columbia out of Glasgow, arriving at Ellis Island on Dec. 18, 1912.

Marya Osiecka - Ethnicity - Russian. Last place of residence - Kanezyske, Russia. Next of kin in Poland - mother Julia Novak in Kanezyske. Destination - Massachusetts. Joining husband "Konstantyn Osiecka". Height - 5'1", brown hair, gray eyes. Place of birth - Kanezyske, Russia. Sailed on SS Cedric out of Liverpool on April 24, 1913, arriving at Ellis Island on May 3, 1913. The children were listed as follows: Anna, Honorata, Yan, Yadwiga, Stefania and Stefan.

These records can be seen on the website www.ellisisland.org.
