Post subject: Francis Joseph Malinowski
Hello all,
I'm starting to research my family roots and wonder if anyone has any information on my family.
My Grandfather is:
Francis Joseph Malinowski born Poland in 2/18/1902
Francis has a brother named Mike born in 1900
Both immigrated to Detroit, MI (USA) in the 1920's / early 1930's
His parents were:
Jan Malinowski and Maria Lewko
Jan Malinowski's parents were:
Blazy Malinowski and Jozefa Kowalczuk
If anybody has any information about my family, I would greatly appreciate it!
Darren

Hi Darren...
If you haven't already, I suggest you start with some searches at https://familysearch.org/search I did a quick search and found Francis listed in the 1940 census, living with his brother Mike, in Hamtramck City, Michigan. But there are lots of other hits as well.
Good luck!
Richard

Hello Richard,
Thank you for the reply! Actually, I've used that website and already had that information....just don't have any information about his parents or family back in Poland.

Just to let you know, the name is very common. I was digging for Bernard Rzeszotarski roots in Wheeling WV, and found an obituary from 1942 that said he had a sister named Veronica Malinowski in Detroit. Started digging, and her husbands name was Frank Malinowski also. They married in 1899 in Poland. Sometime after 1920, they moved from Wheeling WV to Detroit. There were several Frank Malinowski's from the census records I found, so I had to use the children's info to verify I had the right one. I don't think they are the same family, as Frank arrived in US in 1900 and they had several children in Wheeling starting in 1900-1918. Be prepared to find lots of Frank Malinowski's, I think. There are many variations of the name also. If you know where they lived, you can search by just address in the keyword part at Ancestry.com, and it will show you some of the alterations to the names if they had a city register. Just from Wheeling, I found the name was listed as Miloski, Marlenoski, Matinowski, Malinoski, Malinski, etc. Good luck on your search.
John
Edit: I think the 1930 and 1940 Detroit census are both on Ancestry.com, but I'm having trouble posting the 1940 scan. 1940, has both Frank-38 and Mike-40, along with Franks' wife Mary(27) and daughter Joane(3). The 1930 census shows the 2 brothers with a family of Andrew and Bertha Safronenko, they are listed as brother-in-law, so Bertha was their sister? I'll try to post the scans later, not sure if you had this info. There's a Nov 27, 1927 border crossing to Detroit from Winnipeg Canada for Bertha Safronenko, not sure if any of the dates help.

Yes, Joann was my mother and Frank and Mary were my grandparents. Unfortunately, everyone has passed away and I have nobody I can talk to about our history. Luckily, my mother had a birth certificate for her father Frank, so that led me to his parents names.
It looks like the two older children (Frank and Mike) were born in Poland and their sister Bertha was born in Canada. So I'm going on the theory that the family migrated from Poland to Winnipeg, Manitoba some time prior to 1909.

dtoneill, I'd say it's very possible they were all from Poland. On the 1930 census, it says all 3 siblings were born "Canada-English", but on the 1940 census, it says both brothers were born in Poland. See if you can find either Frank's or Mike's death certificate or obituary. Sometimes you get lucky, and it will name the place they were from more specifically than just "Poland". The clues we discard, are the ones that eventually lead you in the right direction. When I was looking for info on my great-great grandfather, I dismissed a boarding pass that said he was from "Roganow" because I could find no such place. Once I found his obituary though, and his sister, I found Roganow was actually Bojanow. Go through all of Franks known documents, and then try Joann's. Many times, it will give a vague reference to where their parents were believed to be from. I see that Bertha Safronenko died on 27 Nov 1986, in Michigan. Might be worth trying to find the obituaries.
