Hello, I've been doing a lot of family research, and I keep coming up at a dead end at my great-great grandfather John Przelenski. I have traced him back to Wheeling WV in the US under the name "Schauwonske" in 1882. I've been told that Przelenski sounded more like "Pschee"winski, and that is why the Schewinski rose up. I was wondering if anyone knew of any such family near Przespolew. John married a woman named Anne Sonnefeld(Sonnenfeld) around 1880. He also had a brother named Frank Przelenski(1860-1904) who lived next to him. This all came together when I found a relative killed a police officer in 1917, and the newspapers said his name was Frank Schewinski and Frank Przeleonski was in parenthesis. I always knew we had relatives named Scherwinski, but had no idea it was the same family, just mispronounced or one used the polish spelling. By pinging just the address of their bar, I can see all the misspellings. I was curious if anyone else had run into a similar family? He built St Ladislaus church in 1903 in Wheeling, a block from his establishment, which also went by the Polish National Alliance in the 1920's during prohibition. Anne's mother was Henrietta Sonnefeld (1838-1911) and her brothers Michael(1862-1928) and Carl(1850-1931), and they all arrived in Wheelling around 1880-1885. Thanks

Ute, I have seen those. I think I have exhausted most of the research in the US. WVculture.org has a great site for births, deaths, and marriages, and I've checked most spelling combinations I've come across and copied the scans. I might have found John's passanger list in 1880, under "Preslika", but not 100% sure. I actually found Henrietta Sonnenfeld's grave this summer, but it is badly worn and knocked over flat. Most of the Przelenski's and Sonnefeld's are buried at Mt Calvary cemetery, about 2 miles from where I live. I haven't been able to track down her obituary though, as the newspaper archives are missing Sept 1-15 1911. Someone on http://genealodzy.pl/ said he had seen families named Przylecki and Sonefelt in Przespolew, but haven't been able to get in touch with anyone who might have the records:

I also found Michael Sonnefeld's voyage record, and in 1882, he listed Wheeling as his destination. Makes me think he already had family here.
