My relatives' surname was Zaucha, with several different spellings Zanucha, Zatucha in the church records. Then their name changes to Perz also with several spellings Pyz, Peis, Pyrz, Pez, etc. These records extend from 1731 to today. From 1896 -1976 one of my grandfather's sisters still was known by Zaucha, but my grandfather was Perz as were most other relatives by that time.
How can brother and sister have different last names? Why does the family have two different surnames? Why are they spelled so many ways?
