Today we started publishing new blog: "3 Men and a Mom: Finding our Polish Family" written by Brian.
Brian and his family were our guests in April.
This is how their story begins:

“Up until about 4 years ago I knew very little about the Polish side of my family, my mother’s parents and their ancestors. My Mom is the youngest of her siblings by 11 years, and her mother died at a young age so she didn’t learn much about her family while growing up. Even the older relatives didn’t know many details when I began asking - so much of our family history had been lost over the past 100 years…”

"We drove just under 2 hours to Posadowa, where Mom's grandmother Anna was from. Very small village - it was just a few houses along the narrow road, with lots of open space. We drove to the neighboring town of Mogilno which is where the parish church is located..."

Day 2

"We walked down a very wet hill and across a large field - maybe 15 minutes of walking. Got to the house and the men working outside talked to Zen quite a while, looking at our family charts and trying to understand the relation..."

Day 3

"Today we are headed to our next destination, the village of Jaszczew where our Twaróg (Mom’s father) side of the family is from (...) Upon arriving, we stopped by the church and looked through the old cemetery - lots of Twarógs there but we’re not sure of the relations to us, if any..."

We meet a 97 years old aunt.

"She shared an incredible story of her family home being occupied by the Germans, with 11 enemy soldiers living in their house at one point. She also told the story of her future husband, who was captured by the Germans and escaped multiple times. At one point he took refuge in a large pile of hay nearby the family home, where food was sneaked to him when possible..."

And I meet my friend from college in the old house of Brian's ancestors ... Smile

"I did have one possible lead for finding Struziak relatives. A few years ago during my research I had searched the internet for “Struziak” and “Bór Gradzki”, and the name of Dr. Krzysztof Struziak came up with his email address. Krzysztof is the head of the local school and we exchanged several emails using Google translate. We weren’t able to find a common ancestor, but we agreed to meet when I was in Poland."

The last day day in Poland: http://blog.polishorigins.com/2014/06/12/3-men-and-a-mom-finding-our-polish-family-day-10/

"We were fortunate to hear the Kraków trumpeter at noon, even though we didn’t plan it. I found the Bolesławiec pottery I wanted and bought some cups for use at home - they will remind me of this wonderful trip every time I use them."

Thank you again: Jean, Mark and Brian for being our guests and for sharing your story.

But don't worry, in a few days we will start publishing new blog by Carol entitled: 'Wanderlust: Polska 2014'.
