Post subject: crotchet
Crotchet, a kind of stick ended with a hook, is known since the times when man looked for a tool to make something with a thread, a tape, a strap or anything what he had and it was long and flexible enough.
This technique became very popular because it lets to do nearly everything (starting from covers across skirts to hand-bags or gloves).
The most known place in Poland where crotchet laces are still practiced is Koniakow.
The laces from Koniakow are composed with the floral elements. Flower and leaves are join in beautiful compositions.
Below is a picture of the little little lace in Koniakow style which I bought in Krakow.
I attached also the ones I saw in a shop window (also in Krakow). I find them so beautiful that I wanted to present it to you.
In my memory crotchet was especially popular in Poland in the communism times.
There was nothing to buy in shops so women had to crotchet, knit, sew etc. If you could do anything you got it.
My mother was making sweaters, scarfs, sewed dresses, made embroideries, laces, tablecloths and lots of other things. She taught me a lot when I was a girl. Thank you mum
I attached also pictures of two of my pieces (I'm not the author of patterns, but I made them with my own hands).
If you have any pieces made by you or any hidden in your grandmas' drawers, please share them with us.

Post subject: Crotchet
Dear Magdelena,
In the United States, we refer to the word as "Crochet".
My Hungarian grandmother learned to Crochet when she was 5 years old. It was her only Hobby for her whole life till she died at the age of 93. For Wedding, Christmas or Birthday Gifts, we would receive not one " Crocheted Doily" (as we call them) but several in a box, for all the women in the family. I can not even imagine how many she made over her lifetime!
My Granny taught me to crochet at an early age of about 8 years old and I still know & use the basic stitches, however, I did not master the complicated patterns using the thread. I use Yarn, which is easier to see and use.
When Granny died, I had the Florist make up a pretty assortment of delicate flowers and I took one of her beautiful crocheted doilies and wrapped it around the stems and tied a ribbon around them and then placed it with her in her casket, as a memento of her Hobby that gave her great pleasure throughout her entire life.
She left me all her Crochet pattern books and her all her crochet hooks, that included 2 hooks that appear to be made out of Ivory or Bone and I think are the oldest, perhaps brought from her early years in Hungary.
Thank you for sharing the Beautiful doily photos and recognizing the skill it takes to make them.
MaryAnne

What a nice story! When such things happen we often do not find them to be important but with time they are more and more precious. It is worth to remember.

Do you mean any special pattern?
Personally I use patterns from magazines and the one on the first picture I made looking on a doily which was already made.
If you are interested I can show you patterns for doilies from the picture 4 and 5.
