In the 1700's in Miastkowo (Lomza area). The earliest forms were spelled Ciecwierski and Cietwierski (which may have been the Latin form).

Starshadow,

here is some basic information about the surnames Ciećwierski and Cietwierski: both come from Polish word cietrzew- „black grouse”.
In 2002 there were only 61 individuals using the surname Ciećwierski living in Poland. Detailed map of the surname distribution can be found here: https://nazwiska-polskie.pl/Cie%C4%87wierski. Unfortunately there is no data for Cietwierski.

Listen how your surname is pronounced in Polish (click on the “Listen” button): https://translate.google.com/#pl/en/Cie%C4%87wierski and https://translate.google.com/#pl/en/Cietwierski .

Thank you very much Aga. This is so interesting. Do you know why they later dropped the "w" and just spelled it Ciecierski?

starshadow,

I think that the pronounciation of Ciecierski is easier, however accordingly to Hoffman's "Polish surnames" Ciecierski surname has different origins: this is the toponym, from the villages: Cieciersk, Ciecierzyn, Cieciorka (several villages in Poland with those names).

Cieciorka is also chickpeas in Polish.
