I have been looking for information on my grandfather who was born in the town of Liw but I can't find any site that has any record such as marriage, birth or death. His family name is Pietrzyk with a first name of Jancety or Hyacinth. I have always been told that his first name was Jancety but on my father's birth certificate the name listed is Hyacinth. Can anyone help me?

Hyacinth and Jacenty are the same name in different languages. The name is of Greek origin. The Latin version is Hyacinthus, the form which would appear in a Roman Catholic Baptismal Register or birth/baptism certificate. Jacenty is the Polish version of that name, although the form Jacek is more frequently used. Hyacinth is the English version of the name.

The English version is very close to the Latin. The Nominative Singular ending, "us" is simply dropped and the English version is simply the stem of the Latin version.

The bottom line is that the three versions are the same name as they appear in the three languages.

Thank you for your explanation of the different first names it now makes more sense why my father had Jacek for the middle name. Do you know where I could find the Roman Catholic Baptismal Registers for the town of Liw in Poland?

Hi

i'm not sure of the time frame you need for Liw records. From your profile it looks as if this request is in reference to the Pietrzyk family.

Woj: mazowieckie
Powiat: węgrowski
Gmina-Liw

http://mapa.targeo.pl/gmina-liw,697005/gmina

Records available 1819 to 1911--information only, no scans are available at this site.

A pariah index for 1847 was scanned and is onine. It includes the name Pietrzyk.

The site crashed and it's late...sorry if this was not the name affiliated with Liw. In that case you can enter any name at this sire which acts as an index.

I hope this helps you~ as I have been helped by so many on this wonderful site.

Better time of the day to try and give some assistance !

Try this site to start with -it is a summary of all of the areas which are covered...

http://geneteka.genealodzy.pl/?lang=pol/

Choose "Mazowieckie"

In the box labled "Ksiega" enter from the drop down choices "Liw 1810-1865 U" Births , M-Marriages, Z-Deaths

In the box labled "Zazwiska" enter your "Pietrzyk"

The films can be ordered through through the LDS

Good Luck
