Post subject: Ida wins Oscar!
When I was watching it I felt like being on one of our genealogy tours searching for family traces. Only 60 years earlier...

Zenon, I had the same feeling as I watched; I half-expected to see you in the background of some of the scenes, talking to a skeptical priest!
It's a great film, well deserved Oscar.

I once read that Ida is the nickname for Adelajda. Is that true?

Brian,
Have you seen "Everything Is Illuminated"? Its plot is also similar to our Genealogy Tours and there is a very interesting tour guide, quite a character .
Gilberto,
I have found out on Polish wikipedia that Ida (or sometimes Hida) is an original first name, not nickname, known (or better to say, recorded in written sources) in Poland since 1265.

Not yet, but now I'll look forward to watching it soon.

Zenon,
I loved Ida! Just saw it last Friday. I love black and white movies and especially the sounds in this movie. They seem to be so lonely. And the story was so low-key but so moving.
I agree with you about Everything is Illuminated. I have watched that one several times.
BUT, way to go, Poland!

Need to get dvd version with dvd subtitles (my polish no where near good enough). I thought Poland should have 2 by now. In my opinion Wajda's "Katyn" was well deserving to win also, but at least the Polescan claim a oscar now.

Zenon,
Of course, I had subtitles. I only knew the Polish words for "dad, mother, sister, brother, God, hello, thank you, home" and I think "hell." Thanks to Mellisa for suggesting "The Immigrant". As always. "Live long and prosper" I have been working on the correct pronunciation of Wrocław so I can impress you in the future.
