Post subject: Parish Location: Village of Podgórze (19th c)
Any suggestions for which parish served the village of Podgórze, south of Łomża in the 19th century.
I am looking for ancestors / family members with the following surnames: Potyńską / Potyński and Sztażowska / Sztachowska / Sztatowska.
Thank you in advance.

Karen~ I found a family tree noting the following "Stanisław was born on September 27 1828, in Podgórze Gazdy par. Zuzela", so perhaps it is the parish Zuzela which I believe is part of the diocese of Lomza. Here is the parish website with the parish history http://parafiazuzela.eu/index.php/historia-parafii. Perhaps with google translate you can get further info to confirm my suggestion, or others here at PO who are more familiar with this area of Poland can provide more insight. ~PL

it is quite possible that is a distant relative.
my g-greatmother Stanislawa Potynska was born in that village in 1872 and her father's name was Stanislaw.
though it might go back a generation or two to that person with the same name born in 1828.
thank you for your direction as i noticed that my g-grandmother's generation were married in Lomza...but, there is no note of births or earlier deaths with that name.
i will take a look at the website.
thank you

Karen,
I see there are too many places with that name. Are you sure it is this one?
I ask you because Geneteka displays lots of Potynski in a place named Jaminy (and also some Stocowska).
Jaminy is about 3 miles SW of a Podgorze.
Jaminy
184 osoby
woj. podlaskie
pow. augustowski
gmina Sztabin
On the other hand, I found a marriage for a Stanislaw Potynski and Elzbieta Luniewska in 1866, in Czyzew.
Czyzew is about 20 miles south of that Podgorze you mentioned.
If it helps, this couple had a son named Boleslaw in 1867, which is the last year indexed, so there is not way to know if they had a Stanislawa next year.
Finally, maybe you find something in this online database:

My apologies Karen – I did not intend to imply that this Stanislaw, born in Podgórze-Gadzy in the Zuzela parish in 1828, was in any way related to you (surname was completely different). I was only using the birth information to identify the parish of Podgórze-Gadzy in the 19th century.
When I put Podgórze in the search box on mapa.szukacz.pl, 10 possibilities showed up in a list to choose from and Podgórze-Gadzy was the one closest to Łomza. Although I now see on the map itself, that there are at least 42 Podgórze in Poland with 3 Podgórze near Łomza including the one on your map and one in pow. Ostrolęcki (northwest of Łomza).
Podgórze-Gadzy (pow. Ostrowski) is about 26 km (or 18 mi.) southwest of Czyżew and par. Zuzela is in the Czyżew dekanat in the diocese of Łomza. The village of Zuzela is about 5 mi. east of Podgórze-Gadzy along the river Bug. Czyżew is where Gilberto found a birth record for the marriage of a Stanislaw Potynski and Elżbieta Luniewska in 1866. What has made you decide the Podgórze on the outskirts of Łomza is the correct location? ~PL

This location was assumed by me based upon the 1895 Lomza marriage records of my g-grandparents Feliks Celmer and Stanislawa Potyńska that noted he was from Krzewo - now Stare Krzewo and she was from Podgórze.
The closest village by that name was the one I noted on the map...unless there is one near his side of the river that i missed. I figured it must be the one south of Lomza since other marriage records of her siblings took place in Lomza, too.
I only just found these other records - but, i have not had them translated to confirm the home location of their spouses.
In either case, it was also noted that my g-grandmother was the daughter of Stanisław Potyński and Marią Antoniną Wrzosek.
My g-grandfather was from the Drozdowo Parish serving the village of Krzewo and I have been just trying to identify her parish to find any further records of her side of the family.
Hope that helps.
