Have you known that Polish Constitution of May 3, 1791 was the first modern codified national constitution in Europe and the second in the world? The first one was the United States Constitution ratified 3 years earlier in 1788.

Here on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constitution_of_May_3,_1791 you can learn more about the first Polish National Constitution.

It was celebrated in my hometown, on May 2004.

Chicago's Polonia has celebrated the Constitution of May 3, 1791 with a huge parade each year since 1892. The parade is said to be the largest Polish parade outside of Poland which is not surprising since Chicago has the largest Polish population of any city except for Warsaw.
A good site for English language background on the Constitution can be found at usc.edu/dept/polish_music/3 May 1791 Constitution

A site which contains both the Polish text of the Constitution as well as an English translation is www.polishconstitution.org/index1.html

Those are familiar with the United States Constitution may find it interesting to observe how similar the Polish and American Constitutions are.
