Post subject: Dornkinke or Domkinke? or? (1903: Poland or Russia?)
I found the Ellis Island manifest for my cousin's other grandmother, Anna Kretschmann. Born in 1871 and arrived at Ellis Island in 1903, she gave her village of "Dornkinke" as her home. (the handwriting Could be "Domkinke"). I've searched and can't find either.
The Nationality column has her listed as "Russia" and her ethnicity listed as "German".
I'm ASSUMING she came from Eastern Europe, as did our other grandparents did (from Poland). Whether Poland or Volhynia or Russia itself - we don't know. But I've not been able to find any town close to the given name(s).
Here's the Town name clipped from the manifest line. (the ethnicity "German" is to the right) Any one have any idea's?
Thanks,
Bob K ..

This site finds the German name, given the Polish name, and vice versa. It is particularly useful genealogically as it gives the names of the Catholic and Protestant parishes for the place.

Henry, I've tried several combinations, and can't get hits on anything..
I don't want to load a huge file, but this should be enough to see how the name of the town is written.
As the subject says - it looks like an "m' or "r n" to me ..
Anna's name is on line 19, her daughter's is on 18. The town name is just to the right of the center.
Year of immigration is 1902, if that helps

I consulted your case Bob with my colleague, very experienced genealogists, Iwona Dakiniewicz.
She suggests that the village name is Dębinki or Dembinke.
She listed all areas where such villages were located.
Dębinki in Russian partition:
1) par. Postoliska , Radzymin
2) par. Nowogrod , Kolno
3) par. Zegrze , Radzymin
4) par. Zatory , Pultusk
5) par. Potok Wlk , Janow
6) par. Opoczno
7) Wilno county (today's Lithuania)
8 ) Święciany county (today's Lithuania)
Or Dembinke in Prussia partition in Szubin county.
