My partner
dances so lightly;
she has a small tummy
potatoes don’t weigh her down.

I love those lyrics! Here is a link to a very interesting article written in 2004 by Lousie Wrazen titled:
Men and Women Dancing in the Remembered Past of Podhale Poland

http://condor.depaul.edu/~rrotenbe/aeer/v22n1/15_wrazen.pdf

This article discusses dancing and its role in traditional village life in Podhale in years past. Wrazen describes how dancing was a chance for self display and the negotiation of relationships, while also allowing behaviors otherwise not encouraged in everyday life in the village. The article explores Gorale dancing, from the perspective of male dancers and the choices available to the man, and then describes the dance from the female dancer view.

I think that an interesting illustration to this article may be these two videos found on youtube.com

Thank you for showing these video clips of the dancers. I love the way her skirt twirls around.His feet move so fast, it is amazing to watch.
Question: did every area have a different way of doing a particular dance or did the dances stay the same all over the country? I have a older skirt and vest from Poland that my aunts sent to me when I was 8 years old. It is so beautiful and one of my most cherished items. I was in a parade representing Poland in my school in Germany when my Dad was stationed there for three years. This was before the fall of the Berlin Wall.
I always wondered about the outfit and wondered how the dances were performed for the ladies wearing them.

Poland is very reach in folklore traditions and, thereby, in folklore outfits. Almost every region has its own characteristic cut of costume for men and women. You can find interesting information about this subject in Polish wikipedia: http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polskie_stroje_ludowe , and translated into English: http://bit.ly/d9GTpc .

There is a great Ethnographic Museum in Krakow where you can admire dozens of the old outfits, click here for its website: http://www.etnomuzeum.eu/ . I also recommend you to check this website: http://www.stroje.pl/default/index/index/fid/52 .

What is characteristic the only regions in Poland where the tradition is still alive and people use the traditional costumes for example on wedding parties are Tatra and Beskid Mountains areas.
