On a marriage certificate in Polish (1918) the groom is given as born and living in Sereth Bukowina.

I found a Bukowina near Gdansk, which seems very unlikely as the marriage was in Lublin.

Sereth does not look like a Polish place name, yet it's very clear on the marriage record.

Can anyone help?

Helena

Bukowina was a province of Poland, taken by Austro-Hungary, and then split between Ukraine and Rumania:

Sereth is now Siret, Suceava, Romania. There are LDS records:

Format: Manuscript/Manuscript on Film
Language: German, Latin
Publication: Leipzig : Zentralstelle für Genealogie, 1983-1991
Salt Lake City, Utah : Filmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah, 2007

Physical: on 11 microfilm reels ; 35 mm.
Notes
Microreproduction of manuscripts at the Central Office of Genealogy, Leipzig, Germany and at the Chernivtsi State Archive.

Roman Catholic Church records and civil transcripts (births, baptisms, confirmations, marriages) for Sereth, Bukowina, Austria; now Siret, Suceava, Romania. May include records from other villages. Text in German and Latin.

Left-side pages (l. s.) and right-side pages (r. s.) were sometimes filmed seperately and in reverse order on some films.

Record group 1245, series 1, file 1016.

Brilliant! Thank you so much! I would never have thought of looking there!
