Post subject: Looking for Info on Jan Smolinski from 1800's
Hi fellow Polish genealogists. I am posting for the first time here. Ive been looking for a good forum for Polish genealogy and from what Ive read this site is fantasic. So here we go!
I am looking for more information about my paternal side, which is Polish. The surname is Smolinski. Here is what I know:
Adam Smolinski was born on or about 3/6/1899 and came to the USA from Poland on perhaps a few dates. I have that he left Hamburg, Gemany on oct 31 1909 and arrived in the USA on Nov 11 1909. I also gave an immigration year of 1914 with his mother, Aniela Smolinska (maiden name Erwetowska). They settled and lived in Reading, Pennsylvania. Aniela came over as a widow, her husband and Adam's father was named Jan and presumably died in Poland some time before they departed. Aniela was born in 1868 to Marcin and Maryanna Erwetowska (Maryanna's maiden name was Jankowski and she lived from 1846-1917, dying in Reading, PA.)
Some links:
Here is the manifest for Adam and his mom, Aniela, from "Popowo". Definitely my Adam:
http://www.ellisisland.org/search/shipManifest.asp?MID=14214297210138123744&pID=101717110028&lookup=101717110028&show=%5C%5C192%2E168%2E100%2E11%5Cimages%5CT715%2D1370%5CT715%2D13700732%2ETIF&origFN=%5C%5C192%2E168%2E100%2E11%5CIMAGES%5CT715%2D1370%5CT715%2D13700733%2ETIF
and page 2:
http://www.ellisisland.org/search/shipManifest.asp?MID=14214297210138123744&PID=101717110028
I don't know if this is my Adam Smolinski - mentions a place called "Lypsno or Lypno". Hard to tell if the name Aniela is what is listed for his mother or not. I know two Adam Smolinski's settled in Reading around the same time:
http://www.ellisisland.org/search/shipManifest.asp?MID=14214297210138123744&pID=100469030971&lookup=100469030971&show=%5C%5C192%2E168%2E100%2E11%5Cimages%5CT715%2D2326%5CT715%2D23260298%2ETIF&origFN=%5C%5C192%2E168%2E100%2E11%5CIMAGES%5CT715%2D2326%5CT715%2D23260299%2ETIF
Also, according to the Reading Eagle Newspaper Archives, Adam's father is indeed Jan, as found in Adam's obituary:
"Born in Poland, a son [sic] the late John and Aniela (Erwatowski) Smolinski..."
I am most interested in finding ANY information on Jan Smolinski and the name of the town that I saw in the Ellis Island records, Popowo (spelling may be incorrect).
If i remember any more info I will update, but for now Jan is my mystery man.
Thank you!!!

I do think it is Popowo, but if you go to Google maps searching for Popowo, there are five villages that come up starting with that name, and I think at least a few of them would have been in the Russian partition of Poland. I see that Aniela's contact in Poland was a cousin, but I can't make out the village that cousin is from. I was hoping that I'd find it right next to one of the Popowos on a map. Maybe someone familiar with that village name will know.
I see that Aniela is going to her brother Mateusz's in Reading. I was hoping to find him on a manifest, but not much comes up searching for Erwetowski. Seems like that might be a name that indexers might not get right.
Are there any other family members that you know of that might have emigrated before they did?

Hi,
It is Popowo.
I can decipher on the manifest the name and village of a cousin: Stanislaw Hankiewicz from Osniatowo.
I think the second village permits to determine Popowo (assuming both villages should be not too distant)
Re: Osniatowo
It does not exist any more.
Seeking Osniatowo in old documents:
First, I do not see it in old geography book http://dir.icm.edu.pl/pl/Slownik_geograficzny/
But could find this one, very well preserved and indexed document from 1917 giving list of names and addresses
http://bc.wimbp.lodz.pl/Content/12271/ksiega_adresowa_dla_przemyslu_handlu_i_rolnictwa_1917_Cz3.pdf
page 8, Kreis Lipno, Powiat Lipnowski: Klimkiewicz Boleslaw, Osniatowo
It leads us to:
http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Powiat_lipnowski
click on the bottom Powiat lipnowski (1867-1975)
Lipno http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lipno between 1815 and (the WWI?) was within Russian part, http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kr%C3%B3lestwo_Kongresowe
Seeking Popowo is easier, it does exist today, plenty of them, I take the one from powiat Lipnowski:
Popowo
397 osób
woj. kujawsko-pomorskie
pow. lipnowski
gmina Lipno
prefiks tel.: 54
http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Popowo_%28gmina_Lipno%29
On the google map, Lipno is 10 km distance from Popowo, Lipno County, Poland. We know that Osniatowo did exist within powiat Lipno.

Re: names Hankiewicz and Smolinski
The distrubition of those names in today Poland is:

14 Smolinski without diacritic

Last night I didn't find a Popowo without another name behind it. I don't know why I have a hard time with Google maps sometimes.
Have you seen Aniela Smolinska going to her son Adam's in Reading in 1922? It says that she was born in Barany, and this is about 10 km from the Popowo that I saw this morning.

Last night I didn't think that was your Adam in 1914, because it didn't say that he had been in the U.S. before on the manifest, but I imagine it doesn't always have all the facts. Anyway, unless the other Adam Smolinski that settled in Reading also had a mother named Aniela, this is probably your Adam.
In 1922 Aniela's age is not consistent with the 1909 manifest, but that isn't unusual. Her last residence was Lipnic, could that by Lipno? Her contact in Poland is friend who lives in Lipnic, pow. Plock.

Good evening,
I am sorry for the delay in replying, but I just wanted to note that I quickly read the replies and I really appreciate them! In the coming days I plan to sit down and look at the Ellis Island documents carefully as well as the links you all posted. I will post back here with my thoughts. I greatly appreciate you.

While looking for a Smoliński grandmother's record in 1899 in genealogiawarchiarch, I found birth records for Adam and Sofia, children of Jan Smoliński and Aniela Erwatowska. The records #29 and #30 are on page 6 in 1899. The locator number is 71/190/0/87. You can print the scans and convert them to a jpeg and have them translated in the Russian translation feature of Polish Origins. I cannot decipher the place name; however, the records are searchable under Fabianki in Chełmica parish.
Jason, we corresponded years ago, and I am glad to have found you again on Polish Origins.

Post subject: Erwatowska
Hi there,
The cousin that's listed on the Ellis Island record is Stanislaw Stankiewicz, living in the village of Osmialowo that is in the present-day area of Lipno. Stanislaw is my direct relative and he was born in 1860, son of Jozef Stankiewicz and Jadwiga Erwatowska; Stanislaw had at least 9 children, all born in Osmialowo with Antonina Kolankowska. Stanislaw traveled several times to the US between 1895-1905, settling some of his family in Reading, Pennsylvania. He is believed to have returned to Osmialowo by 1910 where he had an other daughter Walentyna. Several of Stanislaw's children stayed in the US. My branch is from the Reading line.
This is to say that the evidence above most likely links the Stankiewicz and Erwatowska mentioned below. Marcin Erwatowska, who married Maryanna, is likely the brother of Jadwiga. Marcin and Maryanna are the parents Aniela.
I've got more on the Stankiewicz (Sztankiewicz) line. I'm looking for has more information about the Erwatowska family in Poland?
