I am trying to determine the relationship of a man who my grandmother (at age 15) lists as her closest relative/friend from her country of origin (Galicia). I snipped it from the Ellis Island Manifest. Her father was dead and the other people on the manifest have the words such as wife, husband, friend, etc. so clearly listed. Do you have any idea of what this word is. I believe it begins and ends with an L. I believe she worked as a maid in Poland before she came over, if that is helpful. There are two other men from her village she appears to be traveling with but they are going to different cities. So confusing, yet intriguing!

Please look at the bottom line at the word before Ludwik. It is not the word brother or friend as those are clearly listed by others' names.

Brother-in-law, as written by a tired clerk.

Based on the line above with 'wf' apparently meaning wife - I would read the next line as "bril" and would take it to mean brother-in-law. Not sure, but that's what it looks like to me. It often helps to include more of the image so comparisons can be made to letters that may be easier to read/understand.

Thank you. That makes sense to me. I am embarrassed to not have figured that out myself! She would likely have had older siblings who had already married.
