Post subject: Mamczur from Galicia
I am looking for records and/or current relatives of my grandfather, Michael Mamczur. He was born in Galicia in 29 Oct 1890. His Ellis Island immigration record(25 Mar 1910) shows he came from Huta Stara. His marriage record(1912, La Porte IN, US) to my grandmother, Karolina Nieduzak from Jedrzejowka, reports that he was born in Narol to Iwan Mamczur and Perannia Pharanc. (I'm guessing that Pharanc is really Ferenc, as I can't find the PH spelling anywhere else.) My mother always said that her father was Ukrainian, but Huta Stara and Narol are in current day Poland. His immigration reports him as Ruthenian. Other than his US census info after he moved to Chester PA, US (beginning 1920), I can't find anything about him. I have tried the LDS FHC but can't find him on film. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place.
Any suggestions woud be most welcome!

You may want to obtain more US records that should have his birth town information, such as his naturalization record, ss-application, death record. & obituary. If they were Catholics in the US, his children's baptismal records may also have his birth town.

Thanks for your help! I have found other records. But, there are discrepancies! His birth year is variously reported as 1890, 1891 and 1892. His birth place has been reported as Narol(WWI draft and social security), Austria(WWII and death), Russia(marriage) and Poland(naturalization). The earlier records have no months or days. For example, his WWI says "Don't know" where the month and day should be. Mysteriously,the date October 29, 1890 appears on his social security application. That date is used on all forms thereafter!
I wrote to Narol and just this week received a reply after months! My grandmother's record was found, but not grandfather's. The whole year of 1890 was apparently searched.
USC Narol is asking for 22 zlotys for a copy of grandmother's birth record. They also want proof that I am the granddaughter. Do you know if it is accepable to put US cash in an envelope and mail it? I did that before to a priivate citizen in Poland and they did receive it. (I wired money to another country recently an my bank charged as $40 wiring fee.)

Where does one see the application for social security? Will it be on Ancestor?? Didn't know that was a possibility....

Thanks for letting me know about Plazow! I will order the appropriate film. I have checked 3 Narol films, and haven't found him so far.

Hi Elaine,
It's been so long since we talked about your family - have you found your ancestors in Plazow??
I visited Poland in Sept 2011 and walked through the Plazow cemetery. I also found that my ancestors from the same area were Greek Catholic, but the Greek Catholic church in Plazow is abandoned. However, there are Greek Catholic records for Plazow in the archives in Przemysl.
Please let me know how you are doing with your research!

Hi Shellie,
I ‘m sorry it’s been so long since I’ve posted. I have made a lot of progress with the Mamczurs, but not through Plazow.
About a year ago, I was contacted by a Mamczur living in the Channel Islands, off the coast of Normandy. She had found a posting of mine on a genealogy site. A couple months later, I randomly contacted a Mamczur in Poland, whose email address I found online. These contacts were the start of very cordial email friendships. Eventually, I introduced the two to each other via email, and they arranged a “Trip to the Roots” in the Narol area, with their families to tour the ancestral areas. I was the main beneficiary of their remarkable one day tour. They visited Jedrzejowka, and met my mother’s first cousin still living there, and saw the site of the Nieduzak ancestral home. They visited the site of the former Mamczury, a village I had never heard of, and Huta Stara and found only a few houses still standing. They also trooped through the old, overgrown Greek Catholic cemetery there and came upon the tombstone of Ilko Mamczur, my GGGGrandfather(1795-1853). They also visited Lukawica the Mamczur family village of one of them. I have a wonderful Powerpoint of their tour! The man living in Poland ordered Huta Stara Mamczur records for me from Przemysl. I now have a Mamczur tree going back to 1759.
It turns out that neither of my new friends is related to me by DNA. I had them both tested by FamilyTree and it turns out that their DNA is very different from my Mamczur cousin(USA) whom I had tested previously.
I am still trying to trace Iwan Mamczur, my GGrandfather, here in the US. I have found him on Ellis Island in 1907 on the same ship as another man of the same name, both from Huta Stara, and both going to Taylor, PA. It is hard to sort out which is my GGF, as they are close in age.
The last record I have of him is a family document dated 1912 in Minersville PA. The document gives me reason to think that he wouldn’t be returning to Huta Stara. A mystery I’d like to solve!
Well, I’ve probably given you more information than you wanted, but you know how it is. Once you give a family historian a reason to recount their history, it’s hard to get them to stop!

I don't think you wrote too much! I loved reading your story, and happy to hear about what you've learned. By sharing what I knew about my ancestors online, I have been lucky too. I think that if more people did that, there would be more connections made. I'm not sure if it's shyness, or privacy issues that hold people back...Thanks for sharing!

Post subject: Mamczur family - Iwan connection
I am looking for more information on the Mamczur side of my family tree. The furthest back I've been able to go is Iwan Mamczur (1857-1947). He came to Canada with his family in 1909 (wife Rosa/Rosie/Rosana) and 8 of their 10 children. I am wondering if there is a connection to Poland, and to Ilko Mamczur because Iwan named one of his daughters "Ilka".
The only information I have for a birth place for Iwan is "Galicia" and that he was Ruthenian.
I'm also curious to hear if anyone has more information about the previously mentioned village of Mamczury.
