I have been visiting my 83 year old uncle, and scanning a bunch of old photos and documents he had saved from his Polish parents (my grandparents). Within the collection were the two attached photos. Neither of us knows who Lopuszka Wielka was, but apparently my grandfather did. He was originally from Gmina Kańczuga in Przeworsk County and wrote to friends and family there.

I'd appreciate the backs of the two photos translated.

Thanks in advance,
Richard

Hello it pleases me that the archives in Wilno have sent me 5 more records to be translated 1 death record and 4 birth and baptism records, all pertaining to the Dowiat(t) family.

Hopefully the script is clear enough for you to decipher. From the 1840 Mejszagola list this should be the baptism records of Bartlomiej and Aniela Dowiatt's children Julia, Nikodem, Alexandra and Maryanna.

The death record that of Bartlomiej Dowiatt.

Thank you again.

Sincerely,

The death record from 1839 of Bartlomiej Dowiatt is very helpful as it lists his living children. I am guessing that Mikolaj is the death record is the same Nikodem of the birth record because in 1840 parish census Nikodem is the only living son mentioned.

I think it is the same person because of the given name too.

Here are equivalences between given names:
https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Odpowiedniki_imion_w_r%C3%B3%C5%BCnych_j%C4%99zykach

When you click on Nikodem, you get to the origin:
https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikodem
https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miko%C5%82aj
In short: Nikodem and Mikolaj are of Greek origin, meaning the same.
Wywodzi się od słowa oznaczającego "ten, który zwycięża dla ludu" (gr. Nikódēmos: Nike - zwycięstwo, demos - lud)
//
It derives from the word meaning "one who gets victory for the people" (gr. Nikódēmos: Nike - victory demos - people)

I am glad you verified my opinion on the matter. The 1840 (a year after the death record of Bartlomiej) lists the Dowiatt Family http://genealogia.lt/pdfs/Spis%20parafian%20Majszagoly%20z%201840%20r.pdf

On pages 25 and 26 the family is shown minus the father (who we know passed in 1839)

#549 on page 25 Nikodem

#'s 514-517 page 26 Aniela Dowiattowa
-Marianna
-Julia(nna)
-Aleksandra

So by the time of the 1840 parish list we know the father died, yet on his death record that you translated and compaing the baptisms you translated. In 1839 Bartlomiej left behind a wife and one son (Nikodem) and 5 daughters (Maryanna, Julia, Joanna, Wiktorya and Aniela).

given the ages of the daughters Iam guessing that the two not listed in 1840 might have died around the same time as their father. I will probably have my reseacher look to see if they passed in that time frame.

Hugh

I have been visiting my 83 year old uncle, and scanning a bunch of old photos and documents he had saved from his Polish parents (my grandparents). Within the collection were the two attached photos. Neither of us knows who Lopuszka Wielka was, but apparently my grandfather did. He was originally from Gmina Kańczuga in Przeworsk County and wrote to friends and family there.

I'd appreciate the backs of the two photos translated.

Thanks in advance,

Richard,

Here it is.

It was written by a friend, but not relative (cf "Panska siostra"), apparently sister of your grandfather.

Best,

Elzbieta ... THANK YOU!!! She was named Agatha Sowa, and had married someone with the surname "Tucka". Her brother (my grandfather Stanley Sowa) died six months later in Port Orchard, Washington, USA. My grandfather used to tell stories about his youth in Poland, tending the livestock of the wealthy landowner. It must have been for Romanówka, who was an "Earl" where he worked.

Thanks again,
Richard

I believe this is a marriage document of my great great grandparents. I am not sure if it is two or three pages. I included the third page anyway. Please translate this marriage document when time allows. Thank you
Christine

Thank you so much for the translations that help me to connect family members. From indexed records, I know the couple's date of marriage 16 Lutego 1767, and Katarzyna Domżał's date of birth 8 Lutego 1739 and her parents, all in Kikół parish.

What treasured pieces of information lie in these records.

Marilyn

Post Posted: Sun Mar 06, 2016 7:33 am      Post subject: 1909 Chicago postcard
Reply with quote

Attached is a postcard from my grandmother's collection. It was mailed from Chicago to my great-grandmother (Franćiska Bejenka-Polek) Kardasz. She was living on Hamburg St in Chicago with her second husband, Anton Kardasz at the time.

From the photo of the house, it appears to be "5045", which I suspect was 5045 Hermitage, where Franćiska's brother-in-law (Anton Polek) and sister-in-law (Hermina Strzelka-Polek) were living with their 13 children, which was only a few blocks from Hamburg St.

I would appreciate a translation of the Polish writing.

Thanks in advance,
Richard
