Albert Scharnatta was born in 1844 in Prussia and emigrated in 1869 according to the 1900 Wausau, Wisconsin census. The surname is spelled Sharnotty in that census. It has also been recorded as Scharnetta, Sharnetta, etc. It is an uncommon name.
We have not been able to trace him back to Poland. Any suggestions regarding the surname appreciated.

It could be Czarnota, Czarnata, Czarneta. Choose a Polish speaker and listen here: https://www.ivona.com/
These names can be found on the Polish surname map https://nazwiska-polskie.pl/Czarnota
Czarnota is the most common, but it could be any of those surnames originally. Albert would likely be Wojciech in Poland. While searching, I found someone that spelled it Szarnata, but that didn't show up on the map...

It worked. I found Czarnota's living in the township in Wisconsin Albert's wife was from. One of the ladies had married in Poland. Checking the Poznan project I found the marriage record and parish name. I ordered the LDS birth records for that parish and found Albert's birth. Wow! Thank you so much for your suggestion.
