Posted: Mon Oct 04, 2010 7:24 am Post subject: The naming of Rzeszow or rather Reszow (Ransen)

I'm curious to find out when & what the circumstances were that resulted in the the change of name from Ransen, Schlesian, Prussia to Rzeszow, Poland.

I suspect the name change came about following one of the European wars that Poland was involved in, but having said that I see online that the oldest document that mentions Rzeszow was the privilege issued by King Kazimierz the Great on January 19, 1351. It was also known as Reishow in 1390.

So we have a situation that most sources say it was always Rzeszow so where does Ransen, Prussia fit into the picture?.

I hope you can help in what seems to be a very convoluted history.

I'm inclined now to agree that the two places are not the same place. I tend to think that the one genealogical researcher who posted this on the web is in error, however, Ransen seems to have nevertheless evaporated into history, even though it comes up in numerous genealogical posts on the web.
