Maybe your maternal great-grandfather had male-cousins, so look for their descendants

Post subject: DNA
This whole DNA subject is likely in its early stages. Don't others in your family have to give DNA samples before it's any good??? If anyone has tried this, it would be interesting to hear the results. Was it worth it? For example, I already know (with some likelihood) that all my family is from Poland. What would I expect to get from DNA testing????

I had DNA testing two years ago. Because I am female, it traced the female line i.e. my mom, maternal grandmother, my maternal grandmother's mother, etc. Didn't learn all that much.
My maternal grandmother's father was illegitimate. In order to trace his genealogy we would need someone in the family through the male line to take the DNA test. So far no one wants to do this, and I have no idea if we'd get any closer to learning the identity of my maternal grandmother's father's father than we are now. Unfortunately, it's not an exact science.
P.S. It also can be pricey!

Thanks for the info Misty69.
Unfortunately, at this point I don't have the money to pay for it myself. Hopefully, I will be able to work out something with one of my male line relatives in the not-too-distant future!

I am still dragging my feet about choosing a DNA test - one for me to submit and/or one for my father to submit. If you have done some DNA testing for genealogical purposes, please post a note with your thoughts. Did you think it was worth it? What test do you use?

What are you looking to accomplish? That your father really is your father? Or do you expect to find some long lost relatives? (unlikely). Or to see if your ethnicity appears to be 100% Polish?
Before you jump into DNA testing, you need to clarify your objectives and weigh the cost in dollars and the cost if you learn you aren't your father's son. Some research will show you whether your expectations are worth the cost. Opinions from others will not substitute for facts, you need to do your own research. I did, and in my OPINION, it isn't worth it.
Some day, we may have sufficently large data banks where you will learn of remote relatives. Until then, you are very likely to learn little.

I am interested in hearing from others about what test they used (for genealogical purposes only) and whether they felt it was worth it.

I didn't really learn much from DNA testing. I want to trace my great-grandfather's roots on my mother's side of the family. Not being able to find a male relative who's willing to take the DNA test has significantly hurt my chances for tracing this side of the family.
I did take the test tracing the maternal side of the family. Didn't learn a whole lot.
My brother, who's a registered nurse, feels that genealogy and DNA testing is still evolving. I agree.
My experience was disappointing at best. Hopefully, others will have a better outcome.

The best thing about the Polish Origins forum is the enthusiasm and spirit of friendship that rings from each thread. That's why I am taken aback by the tone of your message. I appreciate your opinion but not the attitude that accompanied your posting. I have no doubt that I am my father's daughter and a discussion of using DNA testing to establilsh paternity is beyond the scope of this forum. I'm obviously not about to jump into DNA testing, otherwise I would have done it last year when I first posted this thread. I have no intention of substituting opinions for facts and I have been doing my own research. I was simply asking others what test they used and whether they felt it was worth it. Obviously you felt it was not worth the effort or expense. |
My apologies for mis-reading your statement, "one for me to submit and one for my father to submit". From my understanding of DNA testing, adding your father would add nothing about your genealogical roots and no more for finding relatives than your own results. I attempted to give you a technical way to evalutate what you want, and to see if DNA testing would yield what your aims are.
Again, I'm sorry you misunderstood my append. I most certainly misunderstood yours.

I have used Ancestry's DNA testing - I learned that my genes developed in Asia and spread across middle Europe. Since I know my ancestry is from Poland, that was no surprise.
My son's test indicated that his great-grandfather has a close match - someone named Smith,
in New Jersey. Great-grandfather was from Westphalia, Germany. He was already in Chicago in 1880 raising a family. I have not contacted Mr. Smith, since I have found my son's paternal ancestors through Family Search's beta site. I was curious, but don't feel it was really worth it.
