Just starting to delve into my Polish origins and am struggling somewhat due to being cut off from that part of the family. Have found a NY passenger record of who I believe is my G Grandfather. He's described as Polish Russian, and the placename for his birth and last residence is transcribed as Kuboschaw. I've attached screenshots of the original manifest entries in case the transcription is wrong. One possible error is that I think it might end in "-an" rather than "-aw."

So I'm interested if anyone is familiar with this place, and if so, where it might be? And if not, if there's a more likely proper transcription?

Thanks for any help!

Tim

Hi Tim,
Have you tried the Polish Gen Web site?
Go there to search town locator section when you know first few letters of town name.
You can then locate it on the Polish map with mapa szukacz section. The name just might be Kubaczyn. Most transcribers spelled names the way they heard them.
Good luck,
Don

Hi Don,

Thanks so much for the help. Kubaczyn seems like a reasonable stab at the name. Will take that and see if there's anywhere to go with it.

Tim,

If your ggrandfather described himself as Polish Russian I am afraid he didn't come from Kubaczyn, which is located nearby Poznan. This area belonged in 1800s to Prussia, not Russia, see map in this post: http://forum.polishorigins.com/viewtopic.php?p=868#868 .

Try to upload here the whole page of passenger record where your ggrandfather is listed. Sometimes it is helpful to see other words written down by the same hand and try to figure out from that what are the letters in the word we are trying to decipher.
