Post subject: Surname: Zembik
Hello all,
I'm searching for any information on the surname "Zembik." I have heard opinions and read stories, but none of them from within the family itself. Possible links to "little tooth" (surnames like "Zabek" and "Zombek") to a possible relation to Szembek (originally Shönbeck) or simply its own name unrelated to others. Anybody know of this names etymology? Thanks!
My family were Latin-Rite (aka Roman) Catholics and left Austrian-controlled Galicia in the 1880s and settled in Hilo, Hawai'i.
Zembik accordingly to Hoffman's "Polish surnames" is from Polish ząb- “tooth”.
As Philip mentioned earlier, there are 277 people bearing this surname living in Poland (data from 2002). Detailed map of the surname distribution can be found here: https://nazwiska-polskie.pl/Zembik
