I'm resarching the Targonski family who lived in Targonie Wity (and possibly Lomza) around the turn of the century without too much success. I know that Stanislaw Targonski was born Sept 1879 and that he left Poland in 1904 for the US (settling in MA). His father (named Josef) and presumably other siblings remained in Poland. I have no idea if they were Catholic or Jewish or any other details of the family in Poland.

Can anyone offer any help?

Any idea what Targonie Wity was like at that time? Any significence that the family wouid have the same name?

Thanks in advance.

60schild,

Indeed Targonie village is the family nest of Targoński family. Mazovia region had perhaps the highest proportion of nobles of any region of Europe, with up to a quarter of population in some areas claiming noble status. However there were very few large landowners, they were rather small landowners, so called "szlachta zaściankowa"or one of thousands of impoverished, landless nobles.
I do not have enough experience to advise you how to verify this (maybe some other forum members would be able to help here - I've seen also that you've received many replies in other threads), but here is some basic information about this surname:

Targoński is a toponym from Polish village Targonie, Ciechanów cunty, Mazovian voievodeship: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Targonie. The village Targonie-Wity is also in Mazovian voievodeship, Zawady county https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Targonie-Wity.

See the location of both places, and Łomża on Google maps: https://goo.gl/maps/UfWRe74UzdE2

In 2002 there were 1989 individuals using the surname Targoński living in Poland. Detailed map of the surname distribution can be found here: https://nazwiska-polskie.pl/Targo%C5%84ski .

In the old Poland there was a few noble families of Targoński:
