Stare Bystre [ˈstarɛ ˈbɨstrɛ] is a village in the administrative district of Gmina Czarny Dunajec, within Nowy Targ County, Lesser Poland Voivodeship, in southern Poland, close to the border with Slovakia. It lies approximately 9 kilometres (6 mi) south-west of Nowy Targ and 70 km (43 mi) south of the regional capital Kraków.

It is located in the geographical region Nowotarska Basin and Foothills Gubałowskie and historical-ethnographic Podhale . It is divided into the Stare Bystre Górne (upper) and Stare Bystre Dolne (lower) extends over the valley to a height of 630 m above sea borders with Rogoźnik, Maruszyna, Czerwienne, Ciche, Czarny Dunajec and Wróblówką

The church of St. Stanislaw in Stare Bystre is a relatively new church, built in the 1980s.

I have ancestors (and I think living relatives) from Stare Bystre although my family has lost contact with them over the years.

My Grandfather, Ignacy Kieta was born in Stare Bystre in 1894. As far as I know, he had 1 older sister Maria and 1 older brother Francizek (born in 1892). His father Joseph Kieta would have been born around 1860 and he died shortly after Ignacy was born. Ignacy's mother, Anna (born in 1863) remarried to a Jan Stopko (or Stopka) and they had 1 child Andrew born in Stare Bystre in 1898. Jan came to the US in 1899 to work as a coalminer in western Pennsylvania. Anna came with Andrew in 1901. At the time my grandfather was only 7 years old. Personally, I couldn't imagine leaving my young children behind as my great grandmother did but I also don't know what the circumstances were that prompted her to leave them.

I know that my granfather only finished third grade of elementary school but he could read and write in both Polish and English. I have a Master's degree in Engineering but I don't know a word of Polish.

My grandfather and his siblings stayed in Stare Bystre for several years after their mother left but I don't know who took care of them during that time. I know that they had a number of relatives in Stare Bystre at the time and I assume they lived with some of those relatives. I know that my grandfather either lived on a farm or worked on a farm while they were in Stare Bystre. My grandfather told stories about taking care of the animals.

My grandfather also worked as a carpenter. He brought that skill with him when he came to the US. I have many memories of him making furniture in the attic of his house using only a few hand tools. I also do carpentry but my skill doesn't come close to his. Especially with the limited tools that he had.

Francizek came to the US in 1906 with a man named Wojciech Komparda and he lived with his mother and stepfather. He saved money for the next 5 years and was finally able to pay for my grandfather to come to the US in 1911. Grandfather was 17 at the time and hadn't seen his mother in 10 years. The ship records say that he spent the 2 week boat trip in steerage class which doesn't sound like it would be a comfortable trip.

Grandfather worked as a coalminer until he retired. My Grandfather died in 1969. I never asked him about his life in Stare Bystre but I wish I had. One thing that I do remember is that he liked the mountains around Johnstown, PA because they reminded him of the mountains in Stare Bystre.

I've been researching my family history for the past year or so. I've learned a lot about my grandparents lives after they came to the US but I know very little about their lives or families in Poland. I would really like to connect with other "lost" members of my family or with people who may have known my family.

Hi,

I have my maternal grandmother's work visa and it lists Stare Bystre as a town associated with her. It's written mostly in German, so I don't know if that's where she was from originally or not. Her name was Antonina Skrzypek. She married after immigrating to a man who was a fiddler in a wedding band. His name was Roman Obrochta (but on the ship manifest it is spelled as Roman Obrochla), and it lists his ethnicity as Austria/Ruthenian. It also lists his mother is listed as being Marianna Obrochla and her residence is listed as Naprawa, Austria. I've always thought it must have been some kind of joke between my grandparents that he married a woman whose surname means violin. And to make it even funnier, they named their second child Viola. Before I knew the meaning of Antonina's last name, I always assumed that my aunt's personal name was a reference to the flower. Now I think it had a different meaning to them.

Hi! My grandparents on my mom's side are from Stare Bystre. Here is some information on them:

Jan Obrochta (Dec. 10, 1915 - Sept. 12, 2001) married Maria Obrochta (prev. Maria Boblak) (June 3, 1922 - Feb. 22, 2002)

They had five children, one of which is my mother, Maria Obrochta (born July 8th, 1964). She came to America from Stare Bystre in 1972 when she was 7 years old.

She later married Józef Budz, my father. He is from Bór. If you are interested, I can provide information about him and his parents as well.
