Post subject: Świlcza, Rzeszow, Podkarpackie, Polska
Do you have ancestors from Świlcza? There were many emigrants from Świlcza. There were over 500 that had the village name indexed correctly at Ellis Island. There were more that had it indexed incorrectly. It’s a tough job to index unfamiliar names when the handwriting isn’t great. It’s easier when you know what you are looking for. Most of what I have below looked like Swilcza to me. Some, like Swilczy, I thought were referring to Swilcza. The most common was Swileza – I guess the indexers thought that there should be a vowel instead of a c. These are only from the Ellis Island site, and no other ports. I’m sure I’ll find more and add them to the list.

If you know your ancestor was from Świlcza , these misinterpretations could be helpful at sites where you could just type in the village name such as http://stevemorse.org/ellis2/ellisgold.html, or Family Search, etc. You’d be able to see everyone from the village, which is nice because of surnames also being indexed incorrectly.

This is my grandparents wedding picture taken in Hammond, Indiana in 1917. Jan Depa is from Świlcza, and Aniela Lenart is from Załuczne. Jan Depa's sister Marianna Depa Miśta is on the far left, holding a child. Her husband Tomasz Miśta, also from Świlcza, is on the far left. Tomasz and Marianna's daughter Helena is on the right in front of Jan and Aniela. I would love it if anyone could name anyone else in this photo (click on the photo to make it larger)!

Hi,
I have extracted Świlcza births from http://www.szukajwarchiwach.pl/ for the years 1890-1908. If you are looking for a child, or a mother or father in a birth record, with either the Depa or Boczkaj surname, I could send you the information from the record, and a link to the online scan. Feel free to contact me privately, or on this Forum.

Post subject: Depa wedding photo
Hi Cheri-This was an amazing photo to see on a random online search! I am your distant cousin. My grandmother is Helena Mista, the little girl on the right. Her parents were Tomasz and Marianna. Marianna is holding my grandmother's sister Sophia born in 1915 who died at a young age. Tomasz and Marianna had more children; Wladyskow 1918, Munika 1920 and Joseph 1922. My grandmother Helena married Andrew Depa in Hammond in 1936 and they had 5 children in Hammond. My grandmother Helena Mista Depa passed away in Munster in 2002 at the age of 89. I'm planning on visiting Poland this summer with my aunt. I'm wondering if you have any information on the village of Swilcza. Do you have an address of a home that they lived in or the name of the Catholic Church they would have attended? Please contact me if you can. Thank you!

Hi, Really good to hear from you. I will send you a private message as well, or you could email me at [email protected]. I believe that your Marianna Depa Mista lived in house #199. I haven't seen her birth record, but all the younger siblings I've seen were born in that house. The church the would have attended was Wniebowzięcia Najświętszej Maryi Panny - Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. I don't believe that the old church they were baptised in is the current church. Here is an article about the church translated into English - https://tinyurl.com/y9zprvps Here is a photo of the current church - http://spuscizna.org/spuscizna/swilcza.html
Maybe you know that Andrew Depa's parents were also born in Swilcza, as was Tomasz Mista. I should have more house numbers for you. I do know Andrew Depa's grandparents' names, and Tomasz Mista's parents' names, but will have to look that information up.
That is really great that you are going to Poland. I haven't been there yet. I haven't found relatives that still live in Swilcza, but would love to.
Thanks for writing,
Cheri
