My grandmother came to the US from Poland around 1906. I know the town she came from but I can not find any record of her, her sisters, or parents on the big genealogy websites. She always maintained that she was Ruthenian and not Polish but the town is/was in Poland as part of the Austrian-Hungary Empire.

Where do I start to find out about her ancestors? None of my second cousins know anything although they do speak and read Polish - I don't.

Ideally I would like to find an online source (paid or free) on which I can research her family. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thank you,
Debra

what was your grandmother name? Do you have any records, documents etc?

if she was Greek catholic then her parish was in Leżachów, some records are stored in Przemysl State Archives, [email protected]

if she was romancatholic then her parish was in Sieniawa, Sieniawa parish records are stored in Przemysl State Archives too and here www.szukajwarchiwach.pl

Last name was Ciorko or Ciurko. I have no records or documents except handwriting on the back of a picture which is in Polish but with some words using the Cyrillic alphabet. I don't know the religion but thanks for the links!

I don't know.

I do know that the town should be correct because it is on my father's birth certificate. Also, my second cousins grandmothers list the same town. But none of us can go back any farther - although my father told me Evelyn's mother's first name was Katherine and her father's was Ignatz, and that they had 5 girls. That's everything I know.

My guess is that Elzbieta was just assuming based on the information I had given her about Evelyn Ciorko.
