Post subject: Surname Bubnis
Hello,
I am researching the surname Bubnis. I found in the 1930 Federal Census that Olga Mary Bubnis was born in Poland but spoke Ukranian. Addtionally, I found she were born in Sassow, Austria about 1899. What is the most likely country of orgin for this surname or her family?
Thanks for you insights or suggestions,
Paul Baltzer

Post subject: Sassow, Lviv Oblast, Ukraine
SOLVED:
I have found out that the town of Sasiv, Lviv Oblast, Ukaine was spelled Sassow in Polish. The ownership has chanaged thru the years. Founded in 1615 in the Kingdom of Poland until 1772. From 1772 until 1919 became a part of the Austro-Hugarian crown in Galicia. From 1919 until 1945 once again become part of Poland. After 1945 was part of Ukraine until today.

Hello,
It is hard to say basing only on that name, if that is polish or ruthenian name. In XIX century, there were both polish and ruthenians living in Sasów. She probably was child of mixed polish/ukrainian parents.
