Post subject: Strange numbers on ship manifests
My grandfather and grandmother arrived on 2 separate ships. There are numbers across their names and I am trying to figure out what they mean. When I read Jewishgen.org it seems that they may refer to naturalization papers. If they do, can anyone help me determine who to contact to get copies of these papers?
Our surname is Dombrowski and they came from Wydmusy, Poland via Bremen, Germany. My grandfather, Stanislaw came across twice. On his second ship record the numbers are present. My grandmother Franciszka came shortly after his second voyage and also has numbers.
Stanislaw arrived July 7, 1910 on the SS Cassell in Baltimore, Md.
Franciszka arrived Sept 21, 1910 on the SS Neckar in Baltimore, Md.
Stanislaw's #s - 2213 Phil 3-22418 Balt 107/7190-c/a-9/29/41, line # 28
Francoszka's #s - 2213-Phil 3-126867 5/8/36 505-5/19/3/8, line # 16
I am attaching copies of their ship manifests if that will help you.
Thank you for your help,
Carol

Carol,
I do not know the meaning of the numbers on your ship manifests. However, it looks to me as if Phil is possibly an abbreviation for Philadelphia and Balt is an abbreviation for Baltimore.
May I suggest that you go back to the source of each manifest and check to see if there is a Second page to each one. From viewing the top part of the pages-it looks like there is a continuation of each page as it shows Column #13 in the small area that I can see at the top of the page across from the one your relatives are listed on.
If you haven't done this before-find the page of your manifest as above-then go to the top right area of the page and click on the arrow pointing right (for next page). You may find some valuable informaion on the second page, that corresponds with the same line number as your relative. (I found that My Grandmother was "detainined" and needed to contact her sister to get more money before she could be released.)
Some of the manifests seem to have second pages, and others do not have second pages. I don't know if the difference is due to the Ship company and the manifest books they provided or if it had to do with the year the manifest was issued and used.
