Post subject: Gess (Jess or Geß) in Jablonowo/Jabłonowo or Jabbernow
I am researching the origins of a family from maybe Jablonowo/Jabłonowo or Jablkowo, possibly near Schokken (Skoki). The surname coming into America in 1853 is Gess. It may have been spelled Jess or german Geß prior. The father was Gottlieb Gess b. 7 Jul 1815 and came to America with his wife Augusta Myer or Meier and 3 children in 1853. The Hamburg emigration list for Gottlieb Gess and family shows the origination of the family what is spelled as "Jabbernow" (Prussia) but I have not found a village named Jabbernow so I am thinking Jablonowo? I have information on this family once they arrived in the USA but nothing prior to this.
This is the searchable index on Family Search for Schokken, Evangelical Church records. The digitized parish record exists, via Family Search, but it is locked. That means you have to go to a family research center near you to view it.
However, you can search the index for other Jess records.
Here is the link to the information about the administrative district of Schokken (which is about 8 miles from Jabkowo):
