Post subject: Labisz surname
I'm looking for information on the surname Labisz. My great grandfather Piotr Labisz came to Saskatchewan, Canada in 1913 from Cieszanow, then a part of Galicia. Does anyone know anything about the origin of the surname? I see that there is a city called Labiszyn in Poland but do not know anything about the name itself. My dad has told me that Piotr spoke Polish and Ukrainian and was a Catholic. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Thanks very much for the reply! I have put into Google translate and it came out: Labisz - from laba idle, rest '; some forms from the Elbe 'from the Old Polish Elbe, Swans', the insult; also about a big dog ', with German graphic adaptation.
Very interesting, thanks again for your response!

You are welcome.
I have made a search between 1888 and 1895 and could not find him.

Thanks for your efforts! I have not been able to find anything except for the ship manifest which shows him coming to Canada from Cieszanow in 1913. I have found quite a few people with the surname in mostly southern Poland and even a roofing supply business called Labisz Dacher. I was told that he left family behind when he came to Canada and would love to connect with any remaining relatives in the country. Thanks again for your help.
