Both names have been used by family members who came to the US in 1911 and 1913. I have been unable to locate these places. Is there a resource that may link common or slang names with "Official" town names? Looking for Gawinski.

Hi,
The letters "Sch" are not a typical way of beginning a Polish word or place name. The letters "Sz" will give (approximately) the same sound. So, you might explore places in the old Russian partition that begin with "Szar.." or "Szkar.."
If you have a document where you have some difficulty to read the handwritten town name, please post an image here and maybe we can decipher it.

Sophia was right. Szkarawka + Gawiński search gives results for Szkarawka Wielka (Łabuń parish) and Szkarawka Mała (Stary Konstantynów parish). Its in Wołyń region. There are also some deciphered metrical records available.
