Post subject: Horbowy from Ruszelczyce
Roy sent to me a question through our Forum (private message) and gave me permission to quote it and reply here.
ROY wrote: | I know my grandfather and grandmother came from Ruszelczyce. Their first names were Basil (Wasyl) and Maryanna. I believe Maryanna's maiden name was Jamroz. I believe Wasyl was born about 1872, and Maryanna about 1870. They were married about 1899.
I believe they were Roman Catholic, but Greek Catholic is possible.
Their eldest daughter was married in St Joseph Polish Catholic church in Hackensack, NJ.
I have written to the pastor there, but he has yet to send me more information. The daughter was Pauline Harbowy, and she married Anthony Taraska.
Thank you again for any information you may find.

As you probably already checked, the village Ruszelczyce is located nearby Przemyśl, in south-east corner of today's Poland. To see it on maps.google.com click here: http://tinyurl.com/6eht77 .
According to "Słownik Geograficzny Królestwa Polskiego i Innych Krajów Słowiańskich" ("Geographical Dictionary of Polish Kingdom and Other Slavic Countries") published in 1880 in Warsaw, in the second half of 19th century (before 1880) in Ruszelczyce there lived 162 Roman Catholics, 430 Greek Catholics and 70 Jews. The villaged belonged to Greek Catholic parish in Skopów and to Roman Catholic parish in Krzywcza. So, if you believe your grandparents were Roman Catholics you should try to look for parish Krzywcza records in search of certificates.
I have checked State Archives database and, unfortunately, they have no records from Roman Catholic parish Krzywcza . It is a chance that the books are still kept locally, in the parish, or in Archdiocese Archives in Przemysl. In both cases it would require phone contact with them to learn about the books availability.
However, if your grandparents belonged to Greek Catholic church you would have chance to find more information in State Archives in Przemysl. But again, the problem is with the date's range of the books: years 1785-1867. Just before your grandparents were born...
An interesting fact is that currently, there live in Poland 231 persons by the surname Horbowy (no one by the surname Harbowy) and the most live in Przemysl area: 32 persons.
I hope that reply from the pastor from Hackensack, NJ will give you some hints.

A few weeks ago, traveling from Przemysl west, I was driving through Ruszelczyce. I remembered your question Roy, and decided to stop and take a few pictures of the village.
You can watch more of them on maps google here: http://tinyurl.com/64bnhw or in Panoramio website here: http://tinyurl.com/6lukpn .
What may interest you, I had chat with a few inhabitants of Ruszelczyce. They told me that in neighboring village Wola Krzywiecka there still lives one Horbowy family...
