Post subject: Polish Peasant Homes in Old Photos
Do you have photos of the homes of your Polish Peasant ancestors? In this section we are looking for photos that captured the outside or inside of your ancestor's homes.
Please share them with us!
I have attached a photo of my ancestor's home near Drohobycz or Boryslaw. My great-uncle Frank Ferenc visited his family there in 1930. Click on the photo to see larger image.

I love this home. Unfortunately, I can't identify the place. I would guess that the seated woman is one of my Busia's (Aniela Lenart) sisters.

I'm not familiar with that word, "Busia". What is it in English?
Thanks,
Bob

That is what we (my siblings and cousins) called our grandma who emigrated from Poland. I know that there are other Polish words for grandmother that seem to be used more. I have heard people wonder if it's a regional thing, but I don't know. On the English-Polish translator at poltran.com I was given the words Babka, Babcia, Babunia, Baba. For grandfather there was only one - Dziadek, but we called my grandfather Dzia Dzia. So, in other words, I believe the seated woman is one of my great aunts. Happy to answer your question. - Cheri

Bob,
my paternal grandmother who came from Poland was called 'Busha' -- I assume that's how 'Busia' it is pronounced in Polish, and 'Busha' was the 'Americanized' version of it.

Bob and Ute, actually it's babusia. babcia > babusia > babuśka (babus'ka) or babuszka.
pronouced BAP-chah, bah-BOO-shah, bah-BOOSH-kah. It was changed and shortened for the little kids to pronounce easier in America. Dziadzia is pronounced jah-jah, grandpa.
There is also góral word- babka which is a small anvil used to beat on when sharpening a scythe.

babusia
That's the one I remember..
I wasn't sure of the other, tried a number of English to Polish translations in Google, but got no
hit. Kind of thought it was grand mother or grand 'other' ..
Thanks all for the memories.

Use Google's advanced search: http://www.google.com/advanced_search ..
Enter the keyword(s) you are looking for... and lower down, the website to search..
(if just looking for a forum HERE, use "polishorigins.com/forum" to narrow it to only
the forums)
Works for any kewords, and any site anywhere.. I can't work without it...
