Is there a list anywhere showing which years are available for different parish records in the archives of the Łomża diocese?

I'm mainly curious about how far back the birth, marriage, and death records go for the parish of Szczepankowo. Thanks.

Please try to search these https://www.szukajwarchiwach.pl/5/526/0/-#tabJednostki

Most of the records that the scans relate to are written in Russian.

Please see below for the list that you may find helpful as well.

These records are in a possession of the National Archives in Bialystok (Lomza Branch).

Hi Starshadow,

The vital books of the parish of Szczepankowo kept in the Archive of Dioceses of Łomża of which you are ask for, are as follows:

Baptisms: 1750 – 1763, 1798 – 91, 1800, 1803 – 17, 1819 – 20, 1832 – 43, 1845 – 60, 1862 – 64, 1866 – 68, 1887 – 1912

Marriages: 1677-1682, 1686-1690, 1693-1694, 1700-1719, 1721-1731, 1735-1741, 1743-1800, 1820-1821, 1823, 1830, 1832-1870, 1872, 1875-1876, 1887, 1897-1910, 1915-1935

Burials: 1727-1730, 1732-1740, 1743-1768, 1810, 1812-1813, 1831-1852, 1856, 1858, 1885-1887, 1915-1916, 1919-1924

Check geneteka web. They have been indexed.

Szczepankowo belonged to the estates of the Benedictine monastery from Płock later Półtusk till 1797. At first as benefice of the abbot of this monastery then from 1690 as the village belonging directly to the monastery.
The files of this monastery are divided mainly between two institutions (supposedly there are also some documents in other places), the state archive in Półtusk and the Archive of Diocese of Płock. In the Diocese archive they are kept in the collection of symbol: ADPl AO, files of monasteries from the terrains of the diocese, the Benedictines of Płock and Półtusk.

The files elder then 18th c. are rear as the archive of the monastery had been burned down (not completely) during the Great Northern War in 1705. Fortunately there are many extracts of documents from books of different castle courts. These which refer to Szczepankowo (15 – 18th c.) are extracts of the castle court books of Łomża.
I have got register of subjects, serfdom peasants of the village of Szczepankowo and other villages such as Wszerzec, Młynik, Kraski, Wólki, Zaborze, Uśnik from 2nd half of the 18th c. Each one from your region. The villages had constituted one estate property. The registers do not contain all the people living in the villages. They contain lists of families of peasants who belonged to the category of kmieć (cmeto), that is farmer having a house and cultivating full field. There are names and surnames of individual householders (cmeto), names of his wife and children as well as some annotations (like ‘a servant’ – referring to kids or wife or other people living in the farmstead but not the householder). There is also provided number of days of serfdom per week in summer and winter for the villages. Unfortunately, number of serfdom days is not provided for Szczepankowo. There are descriptions of the villages, I mean some buildings as well as register of animals.

I attach fragment of the document.

Here you can find more details about our services: https://polishorigins.com/genealogy/

Good luck
Piotr

Thank you very much Piotr. I am very eager to understand more about the kinds of records to which you refer, as I have never heard about them before. Having heretofore dealt mainly with simple parish records, i.e. baptisms, marriages, and burials.

I was unaware there were such things as "registers of subjects". Were they like censuses? Is there anywhere I can read more about them? Thanks.

Hi,

The sources which I've presented to you are pretty well compiled in Polish historical literature. Although, they had been known since the 'beginning', Polish historians took more interest in them only since the '50. However, the compilations can be found mainly in professional, scientific and academic publications, so the scope of people being acquainted with them is relatively narrow. Soon, there will appear publication on this website. It's going to be the complete compilation on this subject matter, moreover, presenting the source in terms of its employing on both fields, the historical and the genealogical.

Best regards
Piotr
