Hi My Great grandfather (Roman Kocur) came from a village in Galicia called Kielszawa. I know this from a Birth/Baptism record.
Is there anyone out there that has done research in this area? His family were Greek Catholic. The only church records that i have found end in 1836.
I am trying to find more information about my people. Birth, Census....
Any help would appreciated.

Thanks Dan Kocur

Hello Dan

Copies of vital books of your villages from the years 1914 - 1938 were delivered to the Registry Office. I suppose that they are in the town of Baligród. I'll make a call to them and ask. The cadastral map of Kielczawa is in State Archive in Rzeszow
https://szukajwarchiwach.pl/59/1313/0/-/2459?q=kielczawa&wynik=1&rpp=15&page=1#tabJednostka
In the state archive in Sanok you can find files refered to the period of 1945 - 47. These are no sensu stricto censuses but registers of war losses, description of propery of the resettled, control and movement of people etc.
https://szukajwarchiwach.pl/60/30/0/1/31?q=kielczawa&wynik=16&rpp=15&page=2#tabJednostka
https://szukajwarchiwach.pl/60/30/0/5/115?q=kielczawa&wynik=17&rpp=15&page=2#tabJednostka
https://szukajwarchiwach.pl/60/30/0/4/106?q=kielczawa&wynik=20&rpp=15&page=2#tabJednostka
https://szukajwarchiwach.pl/60/30/0/5/114?q=kielczawa&wynik=15&rpp=15&page=1#tabJednostka
https://szukajwarchiwach.pl/60/30/0/4/107?q=kielczawa&wynik=14&rpp=15&page=1#tabJednostka
Generally you can complete history of your people for the period 1914 - 47. As far as I can tell some families came back after force resettlement in 1947 and they are living there now.
I'll chack materials in museum archive in Sanok but in next week when come back to work. We should have descriptions of the villages, people, customs, political aspects and so on written by local teachers in the '30. These are interesting materials although there are no names or not so many names. Maybe some photos.
I'll search for materials from the middle of the 19th. c. and older but it must take some time.
The original set of vital books might have been burned down by UPA to enable identification of greek catholic families to protec them against resettlement.

Take care
Piotr

Hi Dan,
I've concentrated on the village of origin of your Great grandfather, that's Kiełczawa. However, the information is usefull also for two others (Mchawa and Roztoki Dolne). The very small village of Kiełczawa (it's the correct name) suffers on the terrible lack of historical sources.

1) The vital books
The fundament of the researches must be based on just one incomplete set of vital books as copies not survived. There is a huge gap of 34 years, that is over one generation.

a) 1784 – 1838 (the State Archive in Przemyśl)
https://szukajwarchiwach.pl/56/142/0/-/6621?q=kielczawa&wynik=8&rpp=15&page=1#tabJednostka
b) Baptized 1872 - 91 (the files are scanned), (the State Archive in Sanok)
https://szukajwarchiwach.pl/60/530/0/-/4?q=mchawa&wynik=35&rpp=15&page=3#tabJednostka
Baptized 1891 – 1900 (the files are), (the State Archive in Sanok)
https://szukajwarchiwach.pl/60/530/0/-/2?q=mchawa&wynik=37&rpp=15&page=3#tabJednostka
Marriages 1872 – 1924 (the State Archive in Sanok)
https://szukajwarchiwach.pl/60/530/0/-/4?q=mchawa&wynik=35&rpp=15&page=3#tabJednostka
Deaths 1872 – 1913 (the State Archive in Sanok)
https://szukajwarchiwach.pl/60/530/0/-/3?q=mchawa&wynik=34&rpp=15&page=3#tabJednostka
c) 1914 - 1938 (the Registry office in Baligród)

2) Fiscal sources
Certain fiscal sources may provide documents of character of the census. They may help in determining the social status of a family as well as place of the house on a map and in terrain.
a) Taxes of decanate of Baligród 1783 - 84 (Fasje dekanatu Baligród 1783 – 84)
https://szukajwarchiwach.pl/56/142/0/-/6454?q=baligr%C3%B3d+XDSTOPz:[*+TO+1900]&wynik=12&rpp=15&page=1#tabJednostka
b) Taxes of decanate of Baligród 1785 - 89 (Fasje dekanatu Baligród 1785 – 89)
https://szukajwarchiwach.pl/56/142/0/-/6455?q=baligr%C3%B3d+XDSTOPz:[*+TO+1900]&wynik=13&rpp=15&page=1#tabJednostka

c) Register of land owners 1785 - 88 (Metryka Józefińska 1785 - 88
Scans are available in the Municipial Library in Sanok

d) Cadastral map of Kiełczawa 1854 (Mapa katastralna 1854), (the State Archive in Rzeszów)
https://szukajwarchiwach.pl/59/1313/0/-/2459?q=kielczawa&wynik=1&rpp=15&page=1#tabJednostka
e) sketch of the map of Kiełczawa 1852 (szkice polowe 1852), (the State Archive in Przemyśl)
https://szukajwarchiwach.pl/56/126/0/520/1#tabJednostka
The map d) is an incomplite source as there is lack of register of owners of parcels and buildings. Therefore it makes it impossible to recognize the family house on the map. That's why, there must be used just the sketch e).

3) Courts
a) I checked the collection of land registration of curcit of Baligród 1892 - 1942. The villages had no luck, there are no books concerning these villages.
b) I checked indexes of different local courts of Baligród 1917 - 1943. There are no testaments of Kocur family.

4) Before the first partition of Poland the village belonged to several different noble families. So sources from that period (before 1772) must be searched in papers of these families. Sources of census character, like e.g. inventories. There are no monography or any complete valuable study on the history of the village although helpful work about nearby town of Baligród and many others. The village belonged to the families as follow: Bal, Herburt, Stogniew, Bal. The papers of the family of Bal are kept in The Library of Polish Academy of Science in Krakow (manuscripts no. 9431 - 9435).

5) There is still huge gap in the middle of the 19th c. If you want to complete it, there is no other way but going to Ukraine to Lwow. For the Sanok county (Kiełczawa was part of it) belonged then to the province of Lwow, these documents which are not here must be searched in the Central State Historical Archive in Lwow. C.K. Ministerial Commission for abolishing serfdom in Lwow -collection no. 168; The IX Department of the Province - collection no. 146; and Commision of land taxes - collection no. 186.

In next massage I'll write about that description of the village from the '30s.

Best regards
Piotr
