Post subject: Meaning of sutox
Hello,
I was wondering if anyone knew what the word sutox means after a fathers name on a birth record, around 1810's in area near Lubawa? I think I located a x4 GG, Samuel Sobotka(1770-1867) in Lipinki. So far, the marriage from 1805, 7-8 births from 1806-1820, and his death in 1867. On at least 3 of the births, it says his name and then sutox Lutheranus. I can't seem to find what that would mean. Scans are too large to post, I tried cropping them, still over 2 MB, all from familysearch scans. Going to try and put links up from the familysearch site. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi John,
The word you see as sutox is actually sutor which specifies his occupation and means cobbler/shoemaker. The word Lutheranus gives his religion—Lutheran. The pertinent portion of the entry for the B & B of Marcin is translated as follows: “Samuel Sobotka, a shoemaker, a Lutheran, and his legitimate wife/consort Agata Kwaśniewska, a Catholic.
The marriage would probably be worth posting for translation since it may contain info which would facilitate your research.
Hoping that this answers your question,
Dave

Thank you Dave. I'll post the marriage, but I think it has very little. Its a little less than 1/2 way down 1st page, on Nov 24. The death is a little too large, I'll have to find the page and attach link. Thanks again Dave

Hi John,
You are correct that there is nothing important that you don't already know to learn from the marriage record. I can't speak to the death record since it is in German, which is not within my range of expertise.
It was worth a try.

Thanks Dave, I looked for a while, could find no reference to that word. Thanks again.
