I'm sure this will sound silly, but I find https://szukajwarchiwach.pl/ very clunky.

Can someone give me lamens terms on how to use this website? The only time I've successfully used it is when it's been linked off a record on basia famula.

I'm trying to find Lopienno parish records (baptisms = urodzen) for 1870-1880

I thought I could type in Lopienno or Lopienno Urodzen in the search bar but nothing seems to help.

thanks

Hi Andrew,

There is good news and bad news. The good news is that the Polish National Archive in Poznan has births for the years 1875-1920. The bad news is that the records are not available online, which is why you had problems in your search. Here is a link to the archive’s holdings: https://szukajwarchiwach.pl/search?q=lopienno+XTYPEro:pra&wynik=3&rpp=15&page=1

Here is a link to a site which provides info about where records for Łopienno may be found. The site does not always contain a complete list of the available parish records. https://parafie.genealodzy.pl/index.php?op=pr&pid=4703
Basically, it is usually very helpful to know where the physical records of those available online are housed. If you look under “Księgi w parafii” you’ll see that the parish holds births from 1869. Unfortunately, there are no scans for the records in the parish. If you look under “Księgi w Archiwum Archidiecezjalnym: Gniezno you’ll see that some records are held in the Archives of the Archdiocese of Gniezno. Again, the Archives of the Archdiocese of Gniezno does not provide for online access. However, if you look on Family Search you’ll see that the records in the Archives of the Archdiocese of Gniezno were filmed and are on Family Search https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/344108?availability=Family%20History%20Library . (I seem to remember that you used Family Search for records earlier in your research.) Whenever you look at the Family Search Catalog it is helpful to check where the records were filmed. Under Film Notes it states: Mikrofilm zrobiony z rękopisów w Archiwum Archidiecezjalne w Poznaniu i w Gnieźnie (Microfilm made from manuscripts in the Archdiocesan Archive in Poznań and in Gniezno.) This means that there is no need to contact the Archdiocesan Archive since their holdings are available at Family Search.

The bottom line is that online research for the years you want is not possible at this time.

As the ancient Romans would say: “Heu! Heu!” (“Alas! Alas!”)

Hi Andrew and Dave,
I would not give up so easily! They do have the Seelenliste For Lopienno for 1879-1890:
https://szukajwarchiwach.pl/92/83/0/3/116?q=lopienno+XSKANro:t&wynik=1&rpp=15&page=1#tabJednostka
You will find great information there, if you can find your family listed.
Best of luck,
Sophia

They also have birth records for some of the years you want, 1875-1880 inclusive:

https://www.szukajwarchiwach.pl/53/1889/0/1#tabJednostki

Am I looking at the wrong Lopienno? This one is by Gniezno.

Best,
Sophia

Thanks Dave. These two sites are good additional resources I had not used in the past. Some of the records were locked on familysearch and since the libraries are closed I thought szuka had them viewable.

sophia. you are right, i'm looking for lopienno in gniezno so thank you for finding these. This is the second time you've suggested a seelenliste for my but I am a little confused. The dates say 1879-1890 but when I look at the scans there aren't any dates listed on the scan; and very early on in the scans (it was the 20th or 30th image, there were kids who were born in the mid 1880s on them). How do these work? Is it not a "census" for 1879 then 1880, 1881 etc?

Hi,
It is not a census, it was a register of inhabitants, and as such was a "living document" (as opposed to the "moment in time" document which a census is) and so as people moved or died they were struck off the list, and as people moved in or were born they were added to the list. A Seelenlist does provide the same benefit that a census does, by showing an entire family grouped together. You may find birth dates listed, occupations, that sort of thing (I did not study the headers of these particular pages). Once the book got crowded with cross-outs, they opened a new book for a new range of years (and for Lopienno, these are also online).
I hope this helps,
Sophia

Let's just take image 29 of the Lopienno Seelenlist that I provided you a link to.
You see it is for house #9, the Kaeding family.
First line is the father of the family, Johann. Second line is his wife, Anna, whose maiden name was Kurz. Third line is a daughter, Ida and you can see her birthdate, 4th of September 1861. Lines 4 through 7 are Ida's four brothers.
You can see that Ida is crossed out. Now scan further down the page, and you will see that Ida has married Ferdinand Krause and they are still living in house #9. You know it is the same Ida, because her maiden name is given (Kaeding) and her date of birth is given (same as above). You could, otherwise, have gone through a search for birth record and marriage record to find the same info about Ida, but here you have it in one neat package.
So if you are able to find your family on a Seelenlist, it can resolve a bunch of questions for you.
I wish you luck!
Sophia

To answer your original question, I would recommend that you switch from the older szuka website to the newer one. For you, it will likely be much more intuitive. (I still go to the old clunker, myself, out of habit).
So, stop using https://szukajwarchiwach.pl/
And start using https://www.szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl/en/strona_glowna
And I strongly recomment you activate the little button "only photos and scans" which is below the search box.
For a search term, use only the word Lopienno.
On the new site, they do have a section that explains how to search. One of these days I will read it.
Good luck!
Sophia
P.S. Remember that I pointed out not only the Seelenliste, but also the birth records covering half of the decade you said you were interested in.
