I emigrated to Canada at age 2 in 1949. My parents decided to come with me Very Happy . My family name is Kużniak and my ancestors seem to have come from the Szamotuly area of the 1700s and 1800s in the small towns like Braczewo, Sycyn, etc. I think that a kużnia is a smith shop and thus could a Kuzniak be one who works there? I.e. can Kużniak just be the Polish version of Smith? My sister in law says no, that that would be Kowalsky from kowal. But, is there not a connection?
Thank you for any thoughts on this.
