My grandmother, Cecelia Juras, often listed with differing spellings of her first name -- Celia, Cycylla, etc. and usually Juras but sometimes Jurasz, was the daughter of William Jurasz and Helena Opieliwska. She was born on June 6, 1887 and emigrated to the USA probably in 1905 but certainly before her marriage in Massachusetts in 1907.

I would be grateful for any help in finding siblings and their descendants.

Thanks.

Hello,

Do you know the village of her birth in Poland? You need to know that before you can search for siblings and descendants.

I suggest you contact the church in Massachusetts where she was married in 1907 and request a copy of the parish marriage record.

Alternately you can try to find her passenger list or any naturalization records for her, or her parents.

Best,
Cynthia

Unfortunately, unlike her husband, I have nothing about where she was born in Poland or her naturalization records or which ship she arrived on. Her side of the family is a blank. I'll try the church to see if they still have the marriage record from 1907. Thanks for the suggestion.

Hi Walter,

If you can find Walter Slowik’s naturalization petition or papers, it may also have his wife’s place of birth. He was naturalized between 1920 and 1930. I know this because the 1920 census lists them both as aliens, but the 1930 census shows them both naturalized.

Check with the local Massachusetts vital records office to see where they keep naturalization records.

The parish church is your best option. If they don’t give you actual copies of the records, they can at least give you the main information in the record.

Best,
Cynthia

Hello Walter,

It appears that your grandparents got married in Chicopee, MA in 1907 https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N4DG-5W5

I searched marriage records for other Jurasz marriages in Chicopee and found a marriage for a Karol Jurasz
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N4DQ-Q61
Interestingly, his mother’s name looks like a variation of the spelling of your great grandmother’s name – spelled here as Opielowska. His father’s name is different, but I find that US records often have incorrect info. I suspect this may be your grandmother’s brother.

I found what appears to be Karol and his family in both the 1930 and 1940 censuses under the spelling Juras
1930 https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XQG7-RWX
1940 https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:K4XT-LC7

I agree with Cynthia, church records can be very helpful; they can contain more information than the civil records. In addition to pursuing the record for your grandparents marriage I would suggesting also looking at the Karol Jurasz’ marriage record too. It looks like both couples were married by the same Polish priest.

I found that baptismal records can also show a more specific Polish location; some do, some don’t. Records for one of my sets of grandparents did show where they were from but the locations varied on the 3 children’s records and the marriage record. Years later, it all made sense. Sometimes they can show the region, the town the baptism took place in or the actual birth record. You might want to check baptism records for your Jurasz parent and their siblings.

Here’s Karol’s grave https://billiongraves.com/grave/Karol-J-Juras/11990939

My quick look did not find an immigration record or naturalization record for Karol, but those could also be helpful if you find them.

Good luck,
Diane

Thank you very much for the information. I'll follow up on those leads. I got my great grandmother's name from the handwritten wedding information and Opielowska looks like a more likely version of the name.

The search continues.

Thanks again,

Walter

Walter, looks like I found a 1907 immigration record for a Karol Juras that might match. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JXJR-XTP He was going to a cousin Jozef Kubacki in Bondsville, about 20 miles from Chicopee. On the same manifest under his name are other Kubacki passengers. Does Kurbacki sound at all familiar? He shows Cieszin as place of birth https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cieszyn residence in Widacz https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Widacz,_Strzy%C5%BC%C3%B3w_County

I am using the words might match both in terms of the immigration record and the relationship to your grandmother

I also wanted to add that normally church records can show witnesses for marriages and godparents for baptisms. It would be interesting to see if Karol shows up in any of those records or in any other Juras or Jurasz relatives show up.

Kubacki doesn't sound familiar but then I haven't had any contact with that side of the family for about 40 years and my mother stopped speaking Polish when her mother died. We left Massachusetts for California when I was nine and back then long distance phone calls were expensive so I didn't get to talk much.

Progress as I found Karol Juras's draft card and it appears that his home town is listed as Frysztak a village and former shtetl in the Gmina Frysztak, Strzyżów County, Subcarpathian Voivodeship, Poland. Frysztak lies in historic Lesser Poland, and in 1772–1918 it was part of Austrian province of Galicia. It's a pretty good guess that my grandmother was from there as well.

Karol Juras was killed when he was hit by a truck while crossing the street to catch a bus to take him to church. He was 74. Sometimes there's more than a touch of melancholy when finding ancestors.

Walter,
This map of the Frysztak area
https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Frysztak,+38-130,+Poland//@49.8402791,21.6006191,13z/data=!4m10!4m9!1m5!1m1!1s0x473dad1830e3d2e7:0x361d405ee5589aba!2m2!1d21.6104056!2d49.8409644!1m0!3e2!4e1 ties in the town on the WWI Draft registration record and the towns from the immigration record that you found : Frysztak from the draft registration with Glinik Dolny (last residence of the Kubacki family) and Widacz (last residence of Karol Juras), both within easy walking distance. Alsom under 2 miles north of Frysztak is a village called Cieszyna, which could be Cieszin, the place named for Karol’s birth on the manifest.

On Karol’s immigration record, it looks like the passengers on lines 17 thru 27 all came from the same area and were probably traveling together.

I did try to check Geneteka for births of your ancestors in the Frysztak area, but did not find any matches that jumped out at me as being obvious. https://geneteka.genealodzy.pl/index.php?op=gt&lang=eng&bdm=B&w=09pk&rid=5662&search_lastname=jurasz&search_name=&search_lastname2=&search_name2=&from_date=&to_date=&near=1&rpp1=50&ordertable=[[0,%22asc%22],[1,%22asc%22],[2,%22asc%22]]&searchtable=&rpp2=50

Good luck as your search continues. It will be interesting to see what church records show. You are right, there can be some melancholy uncovering the past.

Diane

Hello.

I am researching Opielowski in the Frysztak area. A number of them emigrated to the Lowell area in MA. I did note an indexed birth record for Cecylia Jurasz born 1887 in Cieszyna, Frysztak parish. If that sounds like your Cecylia, her birth record would indeed be found in the Frysztak parish records. I've attached a screenshot of the index record. There is a record for the birth of Helena Opielowski in Cieszyna in 1861. Also note there are lots of indexed Jurasz and Opielowski surname records as far back as the 1780s in woj. Podkarpackie found at https://geneteka.genealodzy.pl/index.php

Cheers

Thanks for the link. That is my grandmother. I've found two listings for her at the site under Cecylia and under Cecilia but I don't find the additional heading of JuraszCecylia.png with a note of the file size. All I get is the bare listing of name, year, parish and city.

I've attached a larger copy of the screenshot. It shows the search criteria I used. I hope that clears up any confusion.
