Hello all,

My family has been wondering about the origin and meaning of our last name Szurmant.

The origin of our line is in the Srem area. It appears that all Szurmants in the area are merging on my Greatgreatgreatgrandfather Jacobus Szurmant (1798-1849) (also Szurmann, Szurmandt, Szurman). Most records are from Dolsk.

I cannot find any record of a Szurmant before that or know anything about the meaning and origin of the name. Any info or best guess would be much appreciated.

Hendrik

Hello Hendrik,

Surname Szurmant (Szurman, Surman) comes from German personal name Surmann or as a Jewish name, Surman means “son of Sora”. There is also a theory that this surname is from the word surman - trumpeter (surma is a shepherd's trumpet).

Nowadays, there are only 4 people bearing the surname Szurmant (3 in Poznań, 1 in Śrem), detailed map of the surname distribution can be found here: https://nazwiska-polskie.pl/Szurmant

There are also some people with Surman surname: https://nazwiska-polskie.pl/Szurman

Indeed, in Geneteka database I found only 2 Szurmandts, both from Dolsk parish: https://geneteka.genealodzy.pl/index.php?op=gt&lang=pol&bdm=B&w=15wp&rid=B&search_lastname=szurmant&search_name=&search_lastname2=&search_name2=&from_date=&to_date=

More records from Dolsk are stored in archives in Poznań.
