Post Posted: Thu Jan 12, 2012 1:42 am      Post subject: Nowy Targ district and parishes where records are kept at
Reply with quote

In volume 1 of Jozef Bubak's books "Nazwiska ludnosci dawnego starostwa nowotarskiego" I found a list of villages/towns in the district of Nowy Targ with the parishes where birth, baptismal, marriage, and death records of the respective village/town are kept at. Although it does not include all types of records and years, I thought it might still be helpful to those researching their ancestors who came from the Nowy Targ district.

Parafia or Par. = Parish; LB = Liber Baptisatorum = Book of Baptisms; LN = Liber Natorum = Book of Births; LC = Liber Copulatorum = Book of Marriages; LM = Liber Mortuorum = Book of Deaths; Arch. Kurii Metr. w Kr. = Archiwum Kurii Metropolitalnej w Krakowie.

This in invaluable information for me and others I am sure, who have ancestors from this area and plan to go there and search--a shortcut for getting pointed in the right starting direction for a records search. Once again, Ute, you 'come to the rescue' (you should be a paid consultant for
some large geneology site)!

Walter,
I’m sorry about the delay in my response. Jozef Bubak’s books (two volumes) were recommended to me by a fellow researcher in 2001 when I started researching my paternal grandfather’s ancestors who were from the district of Nowy Targ. Unfortunately, the books are out of print, but I was lucky and found the two volumes in the university library close to where I live. I've used them many times during these past few years.

There are two variations of the name Chaberny in the parish records Jozef Bubak researched, the most common one being Haberny: Haberny was mentioned as early as 1608 in the village of Koniowka. In brackets it says “WT” = Wizytacje biskupa Piora Tylickiego nr. 25 [which should translate to “Visitation of Bishop Pjo(t]r Tylicki no. 25], Archiwum Kurii Metropolitalnej w Krakowie". Bishop Tylicki was appointed Jan 1607 -- see http://www.catholic-hierarchy.org/diocese/dkrak.html

Haberny was listed 1787 in the book of births in the villages Podczerwone and Dzianisz; 1788 in the books of births in the village Chocholow; Chaberny 1787 in the book of births in the village Dzianisz; 1789, 1792, 1799, 1820 in the book of births in the village Chocholow; Haberny was also found in the Ksiazka meldunkowa (registration books) of the villages Czarny Dunajec, Chocholow, Ciche, Dzianisz, Koniowka, Odrowaz, Podczerwone, and Stare Bystre.

I checked the Ellis Island database for the name Chaberny resp. emigrants from the district of Nowy Targ -- no Chaberny/Chaberna, but some Haberna from Czarny Dunajec, Podczerwone, and (most likely) Koniowka (with the usual misspellings of names and locations):

Ratarzyna [Katarzyna] Haberna, Czarnydunajec, 1897, 37;
Hannscha [Hanuscha] Haberna, Czarnydunajec, 1897, 2;
Jan Haberna, Czarnydunajec, 1897, 4;
Stanysl. Kaberny (Stanislaw Haberny], Podczerwone, 1899, 32;
Kunig'a. Haberna, Kunowka (Koniowka?), 1902, 19;
Stanislaw Haberna, Konionka (Koniowka?), 1902, 24;
Zeofia [Zofia] Haberna, Kamjonka, Austria (Koniowka?), 1904, 22;
Henandra [??] Haberna, Podczerwone, 1906, 18;
Anna Haberna, Kamiowo Ke, Austria (Koniowka?), 1913, 18;
Josef Haberny, Podczerwone, 1913, 35;
Agnieska Haberna, Pod..., Galicia [Podczerwone], 1913, 24;
Uraniscek [Franciszek?] Haberna, Pod..., Galicia [Podczerwone], 1913, 7;
Wbadzslaw [Wladislaw] Haberna, Pod..., Galicia [Podczerwone], 1913, 1.

There’s an old map in Bubak’s books that shows where exactly the villages mentioned above are located. If you wish, I can send you a copy of the map as private message or to your e-mail address.

Walter,
I found a Johann Chaberny from Podczerwone (misspelled Podcheswench) at the Ellis Island site who traveled to the US on board of the steamship 'Patria' that left Hamburg on July 23, 1899 and arrived at the port of New York on Aug 4, 1899. He was 50 years old at the time, widowed, his occupatuion was laborer, his destination in the US was Tarr, PA.
Perhaps this helps in your research.

Ute,

many thanks for your effort so far.
Your support is realy a great help and I never had the possibility to find so much information
about the surname Chaberny from the Nowy Targ Area.
If you can send me the map from Bubak´s book , would be great.
I had already found Johann Chaberny at the Ellis Island site and researched around the Tarr, PA. area
but without any success.
My Father was born in Carlsfeld (today Miscziewo) in North East of Poland (nearly Oletzko) I have found his Grandfather Friedrich Chaberny born around 1830 in the Oletzko Area.
Now I´m looking how the Chabernys from North East Poland are matching to the Chabernys from the Nowy Targ Area.

many thanks again.
Walter

Walter,
I'm glad to hear that you have already found information on your father and grandfather in North East Poland. I just sent you the map that Jozef Bubak provided in his books on the history of surnames in the district of Nowy Targ by private mail and wish you the best of luck in your further research!

Hi Ute,

This will help so many people!
The dates are one generation earlier than I need but...
Are there any "Samiczak," or "Gubala" names in Wroblowka?

You have helped me in the past. For then and now, thank you.

Hi Cath,
I found some information for you in Jozef Bubak's books on the history of surnames in the district of NOwy Targ and also a possible connection to one of my Dlugopole ancestors. To continue our discussion and to connect with other members who have ancestors in Wroblowka I moved our posts on to the Wroblowka thread that Shellie started in Aug 2010:
http://forum.polishorigins.com/viewtopic.php?t=597&highlight=Wroblowka
I hope that's alright with you,
Ute
