Hi, I'm trying to find information on my great-grandfather, Michal Jasiorkowski, who immigrated to the US in the early 1900s but was born in Poland.

I have his naturalization papers, as I've attached here. It lists his birthday as 10 September, 1875 in Lacko Austria Hungary. His marriage certificate from the US in 1906 says he was 31 (which would match the 1875 birth year) and just says he was born in Galicia, Austria. It also lists his father as Michael, but does not list a mother's name.

(I can't seem to find an immigration record for him, or at least one I can verify is him, even though the naturalization papers gives a date of immigration.)

I've tried searching https://geneteka.genealodzy.pl for a birth record to no avail. If anyone can help me locate a birth record, given this date, or help me locate where I can search for records in this town of Lacko that I can manually browse, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you so much.

Hi, the surname you are looking for (Jasiurkowski) appears in parish Łącko, Lesser Poland Voivodeship.
Here https://geneteka.genealodzy.pl/plany.php you can find that birth records for Łącko are still indexed (and they are not available online), so I think you have to wait till they will appear in Geneteka. Although there is one Michał Jasiurkowski born in 1848 - maybe the father of your great-grandfather https://geneteka.genealodzy.pl/index.php?op=gt&lang=pol&bdm=B&w=06mp&rid=11248&search_lastname=jasiurkowski&search_name=&search_lastname2=&search_name2=&from_date=&to_date=

You can also try this:

Hi,
I know you are looking for Lacko records, but I wasn't sure if you knew that Michal had two siblings who also came to the USA. Jozef and Jakub. Here they are in the 1910 census living with Michal. Also, Sophia's brother is living with them.

Hi Trish, thanks for the Census. I was aware of this census and believe to have found an immigration record for Michal’s brother Jozef, as well as a WWI Draft Registration, and both appear to say he is also from Lacko. That’s the only info I’ve been able to find for him and haven’t found anything on Jakob.

As far as Sophie Zwonlinska is concerned, I believe I may have found where she is from. The marriage certificate I have says her father is John and mother is Tekla (looks like last name is spelled Berzoak, but obviously this isn’t a correct Polish spelling).

On FamilySearch, I have found a record (no image, unfortunately) of a Sophia Zwonlinka born in Maszkowice, Maszkowice, Kraków, Poland in 1879 to a Joannes Zwolinski and Thecliz Baziak (close enough to the spelling in the marriage certificate). The birth info seen here:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XPBZ-KJT

I found a few other siblings, but no John as listed in the 1910 Census.

I also found a probable immigration record for Sophie, as it says she is from Maszkowice and coming to see her cousin Jan Baziak in New Haven. https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/7488/images/NYT715_15-0826?treeid=&personid=&hintid=&queryId=66971b6e72cd2bb251085b773bed7bca&usePUB=true&_phsrc=EBJ514&_phstart=successSource&usePUBJs=true&_gl=1*q7bh9r*_ga*ODQwODQ5MzMuMTY0MjA1NzQwNw..*_ga_4QT8FMEX30*MTY1NzU4MTQ2Mi43MS4xLjE2NTc1ODUxMzQuMA..&pId=4004954837

Since there are no images of any of the birth records, however, I haven’t been able to trace anything back further than this.

Hi,
I have found Michal's family tree on FamilySearch and some info about his broher Martin born in 1882. I found Martin's neutralization documents https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSMW-Y9ZC-L?i=696&cat=1409121 where he declared that he was born in Zarzycze, 25 Dec 1882. I found that there is a village Zarzecze only 3 kilometers form Łącko.

Since I didn't find many records for Jasiurkowski family in parish Łącko, I've checked if there are some records for Zarzecze and I found this https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/686169?availability=Family%20History%20Library

There is a birth record for Martin https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XPBN-429 and his siblings, including Jakub https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XPBF-BGC or Jan https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X5WY-SMG. And there is a birth record for Michał born 29 Sept 1875 https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XPBF-89W Although the surname is very often misspelled, you can see that for example here https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X5W5-R8J the father is Jan Jasiurkowski and the mother is Katarzyna Jawor/Jaworska (there are many records for this couple).

Could it be the family you are looking for? The only thing that doesn't match here is that in Michael's naturalization document his father's name is Michal.

Hi Monika, thank you for the research and links.

Michael’s birth record you linked to lists the baptism date as 29 Sep 1875, while his naturalization record which I originally attached, as well as his SSN Death Index that I’ve found lists his birth date as 10 Sep 1875. And as you pointed out, Zarzecze is only 3km from Łącko. So this could very well be the Michael I'm looking for.

The discrepancy is obviously with the father’s name. I’ve attached the marriage record to show how it lists his father as Michal and does not list a mother’s name (which I find odd).

On the marriage record, it says he lives at 2 Silver Place in New Haven, CT. I’ve tried to track him and his brothers through the city directories and US Census records to ensure I have the right people, but it’s getting confusing. In the 1920 Census, Michael and his family are living at 65 Eaton St. All of the names and ages match who is in this family, so I am 100% sure this is them. He’s been at that address since 1911, where I can trace him through the city directories.

Going back to the 1910 Census, it lists Michael’s brother Joe and Jake (who the Census says is much older, but the link you provided would show Jake as younger) living together.

The problem is there is another Michael and Joseph Jasuirkowski at the same time in the same city, and there is eventually a Martin that lives with them. You’ve provided the link to a Martin’s birth record (1883), which would be within a year of birth I’ve found on his 1917 Connecticut Military Census listing him as 34 years old, and would be close to the naturalization records you linked to (although the birth date is different).

The Military Census lists him at 84 Barclay St, where in the city directory of that year (and previous/future years) there is a Martin and Michael (erroneously spelling their surname as Garkofski). However, there is also an entry for my great-grandfather Michael living at 65 Eaton, which as previously mentioned, I know is correct. At this point, it would appear that this is a different Martin because he’s living with a different Michael that isn’t my ancestor.

A WWII Draft card lists Martin’s birthdate (exact same date as on his naturalization papers) living at 185 Bradley St. It lists his closest contact as Ann Jasiorkowski and says she’s his niece (this is my great aunt) living at 46 William St, where I know for a fact my grandfather and great-grandfather (and their family) was living at this time. There is also a naturalization index card (matching the same petition number) from 1937 listing Martin at this same address. Yet another naturalization index card (not sure the year) lists this same Martin and same petition number living at a 92 Mechanic Street, which is the same street where I know this side of my family used to live on when I was growing up.
So some sources seem to indicate this is a different Martin living with a different family, while others suggest this is clearly the Martin related to my family.

Martin’s 1906 immigration record I’ve found thank to your helpful links lists his place of birth as “Zarzyze” (which I’m assuming is Zarzecze as listed in the FamilySearch link you provided for his birth). I’m linking it here: https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/7488/images/NYT715_796-0477?pId=4013618799

The manifest says he’s coming to see his brother. The brother’s name is indexed as Jackson and looks to be written similarly to that or to Jacobus (which would fit the record for Jacob you linked to), saying he’s living at 164 Brewery St.
In the city directory of that year, there is a Michael, Jacob and Joseph Jaserkowski all living at 164 Brewery St. However, there is another surname spelled Jasurkowsky that also lists a Mike living at 164 Brewery St, along with a Michael and Tony of that same surname spelling both living at 2 Silver court.

As mentioned earlier in the marriage record, my Michael is living at 2 Silver Place in this year.

This would seem to suggest this Martin is a different family, as there are two sets of Michaels and Josephs at this time.
But again, Martin’s WWII Draft card specifically states his niece is living at an address I know my ancestor’s family to be living at.

It’s really frustrating. It would appear the links you provided could be the right Michael I’m looking for, aside from the different father’s name, but tracking the various Martins and Josephs do and don’t seem to align with the various records, depending on which ones I’m looking at.

Well, I didn't expect two Michaels born almost at the same time in a close distance and living in the same city in the US, especially that Jasiurkowski isn't very common surname in Poland, but it seems that everything is possible.

In summary:

1) Michael 1874-1958, married to Agnes. I think that this is his immigration record: he was travelling from Zagórzany/Zagorzyn in 1899 https://heritage.statueofliberty.org/passenger-details/czoxMjoiNjA0NDcwMDcwMDEzIjs=/czo5OiJwYXNzZW5nZXIiOw== to his brother (I can't read the name).
There is also Joseph born ab. 1876: https://heritage.statueofliberty.org/passenger-details/czoxMjoiMTAzNjgwMTUwMTYxIjs=/czo5OiJwYXNzZW5nZXIiOw== and
https://heritage.statueofliberty.org/passenger-details/czoxMjoiMTAyNTc0MTMwMTg5Ijs=/czo5OiJwYXNzZW5nZXIiOw==

Address in 1920 for Michael and Joseph: 84 Barclay St

2) Michael, 10 September 1875 – 14 October 1966, married to Sophie. I can't find his immigration record from 1901.
Address in 1920: 65 Eaton St

Martin, born 1882, is travelling to New Haven in 1906 to his brother, probably Jacob. I found this record for Jacob https://heritage.statueofliberty.org/passenger-details/czoxMjoiMTAyMzQ5MDEwNjQxIjs=/czo5OiJwYXNzZW5nZXIiOw==

Martin got married to Anna on 15 Nev 1909 in New Haven. Maybe you will be able to find this marriage certificate and check if there are his parents names. You can also check Joseph Jasiorkowski marriage on 4 Sep 1911 in New Haven.

Here is also the list of baptism for the Jasiurkowski siblings from Zarzecze (parents: Jan Jasiurkowski, Katarzyna Jawor(ska) so you can compare it with the information that you have.

Franciscus 21 Sep 1862
Marianna 01 Jun 1864
Sophia 16 Dec 1866
Anna 28 Mar 1869
Joannes 26 Apr 1871
Catharina 31 Aug 1873
Michael 29 Sep 1875
Anastasia 27 Dec 1877
Jacobus 06 Jun 1880
Martinus 24 Sep 1882

It looks like Joseph and Michael no. 1 were from another family. But I don't know why Martin was living at the same place . Maybe they were cousins or maybe there was another Martin, as you said.

I wanted to update Monika and Trish since you were both very helpful to me in my search. My uncle told me what church he believed my great-grandparents were married, and I emailed them asking for help retrieving the record of their marriage. After a long wait, I’m pleased to say they were able to send me a picture. I’ve attached it here.

It looks like my great-grandfather’s father was indeed named Michael (as stated on the marriage record), and now have a mother’s name listed! It looks like Sophie Sobaszewska. My great-grandmother’s parents are Jan and Tekla Madziak.

Tekla’s surname seems to be slightly different than what is written on the city marriage record I attached (looks like Berzoak), which matches more closely to records I’ve found on FamilySearch listing her name as Thecla Baziak. Of course, this and the other records on here are only indexed, so I can’t see the actual record and how it’s written.

Here’s what I believe to be Sophie Zwolinska’s birth record: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XPBZ-KJB

As far as Michael is concerned, there have been some links you both have sent me showing a possible baptism record for Michael (and potential siblings) shortly after the birthdate I have of him, but those show the mother’s name as Katarzyna (with several different spellings of a different surname) and the church record states his mother is Sophie Sobaszewska.

So I’m still at a dead end there in regards to him.

Hi, it's great that you have this picture and some new information about your family. I think that Tekla's surname is Baziak - in Geneteka you can find many families called Baziak that lived in Maszkowice but Madziak doesn't appear in Łącko or nearby parishes.

You can also see the names of witnesses - Franciszek Rychlec and Jan Gromala. Their surnames also appears in Maszkowice - maybe they were somehow related (it's just a guess because not all records are indexed, so it's difficult to prove that it's your family, but you can find record for Tekla Baziak born in 1841 (daughter of Józef Baziak and Tekla Rychlec) and her sister Katarzyna Baziak born in 1843, married to Antoni Gromala). It's just a hint for your further research for this part of your family tree.

Michael's mother is listed as Sophie Sobaszewska and I'm not sure if this is the correct spelling of her surname, because it doesn't appear in all Lesser Poland Voivodeship. The closest version of this surname in parish Łącko is Słabaszewska/Słabaszowska.

Records from parish Łącko are still indexed in Geneteka so I think you will have to wait until they are published or you can contact Tarnow Diocesan Archives http://archiwum.diecezja.tarnow.pl/kontakt.html and ask for research to get the copy of Michael's birth record.

Edit:
It seems that somebody from Baziak family wrote a book about his ancestors https://akant.org/images/pdf/jolanta_en.pdf
You can find Jan Zwoliński and Tekla Baziak on page 312.

Wow, thank you so much Monika for the incredible info and the link to the Baziak family book. I will look through it all and try to connect the dots.
