I would appreciate if someone could clarify some doubts I have concerning records writen in Latin.

1. in a baptismal record, godparents are described as "famatus civis Lucas Magrowski et Catharina Magrowska conjuges libi". I am aware that 'conjuges" means "married couple", but have no idea about 'libi".

2. in a death record it reads "sepultus est infans Magrowskich". I know that 'natum" refers to a boy and 'natam' to a girl, but does 'sepultus' refer to both genders? Alos, Magrowski is declensioned as Magrowskich: does it mean more than one child died?

3. in the 1773 death certificate attached I read: "die 9 Septimus. Sepulty est in cemeterio ad ortum ostivalem infans annorum nne
filia FF Josephi et Magrowskich Raciazek". What 'ostivalem' means? How old was the child? This couple had two girls: one born in 1769 and the other in 1771.

4. same family as above. 1776. A boy, Jakob, was born after those girls. I am trying to find out how old was the child in this record, so that I can be sure if it was Jakob or one of his sisters.

5. 1790 death record. Die 12 Feb sepulty est anno zdum (?) ogen (?) in cemeterio ad Septem (?) ?? filia FF Josephi et Susana Magrowskich. Does anybody read any child's name or age?

Gilberto

Gilberto, RE: Latin Records

I have the Polish Roots book by Rosemary Chorzempa, and was able to locate a few word meanings for you.

1.) I am the least certain, and you may need to check your document to see if the word "Libi" could possibly be "Libr."
The book says: Liberi (libr.) = there are No children surviving.

2.) Sepultus = burial

3.) die = day

5.) Septem = 7 years old

I have a note in my book that familysearch.org has a Latin Genealogical Word List.

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Search/Rg/guide/WLLatin1.asp#a If this does not work as I've written it-replace the Rg with Rq

I hope this helps a little,
MaryAnne

MaryAnne,

Thank you for your help.
I am aware of the word list, but my doubts remain unsolved.
To my eyes, I see "libi" (image attached) and I see no reason to mention whether godparents had children or not.

Gilberto,

I agree about the word "Libi" as it is clear to read, as written on the document.

You have an interesting group of documents! I hope you will be able to get them translated!

Missing child's name and age.
I see:
- Die 12 Feb sepulta est annua idem ... in coemeteria ad septemtrionem filia FF (Famati fuerunt) Josephi et Susanna Magroski ...
- On February 12 she was buried the same year ... in the cemeteries to the north, the daughter of FF (report of, reporting) Joseph and Susanna Magroski
