Barb,
The information you found about Antoni and the fact he had a brother named Walter in Przywieczerzyn makes so much sense. Do you think it’s possible he didn’t actually know his place of birth and when immigration asked he picked a different place?

I am thinking that some of the information gets a bit "off" because of language I am hoping at some point to get some Polish documents and am looking to write to their parish in Stannowo, Poland in hope that they have baptismal records or something to prove citizenship. I have spend a lot of money hiring help (a lot for me as a retired teacher) trying to get some proof of my grandparents citizenship. The Polish Immigration people say I not only need all these US documents but also as many Polish ones as possible before I can finally apply for dual citizenship.
I am very hopeful with the finding of my grandparents marriage certificate. That should give even more information, and hopefully list my grandfather's parents so I can gain even more verification of my ancestry. |
Hi,
The three villages which have verified documentary evidence, Stannowo, Michalin & Zbrachlin, all belong to the parish of Zbrachlin. Stannowo & Michalin are villages and not parishes. If you are set on writing to a parish one of the links below would provide you with contact info.. Documents from the Parish are housed in the Włocławek branch of the Polish National Archives and the digitized records are available at https://www.genealogiawarchiwach.pl/
The Antoni & Władysław which Barb located are most likely not your grandfather & his brother. His birth date is in January and your grandfather was born in November. For what it is worth here is a link to the record about which Barb wrote. In my opinion it is a dead end.
Birth of Antoni 1884 #8: https://www.genealogiawarchiwach.pl/#query.type=ALL&query.facetQuery.date=1884&query.city=Lubanie&query.suggestion=false&query.thumbnails=false&query.facet=true&query.asc=false&query.sortMode=PUBLICATION&modal=257996505&personTree=false&goComments=false&searcher=big&query.query
If you’re only interest is in trying to obtain Polish citizenship and the following info would be of no help to you. If, however, you are interested in putting together a picture of what life was like for your ancestors you may find the following links interesting. Your grandparents settled in South Chicago and belonged to St Mary Magdalene Parish. That is the same neighborhood where I was born and raised, although not in St Mary Magdalene Parish. St Mary Magdalene closed a few years ago. The link to the Parish of Zbrachlin has a picture of the Parish Church. There is a Facebook group which is posted a large number of pictures of the parish in recent years.
The B&B record of Lottie (Ladislava in Latin) is entry #123 and the record of Stephen (Latin: Stefanus) is entry #77.

Rather than rushing into things I would suggest waiting to see what is found in the marriage record that Marcel has located.
The old proverb of Aesop which was repeated by the Latin author Phaedrus about the tortoise and the hare teaches that slow, steady and methodical research is what brings the best results.
Wishing you success,
Dave

Hi,
No, I don't think so. I tried to find an Antoni Urbanski who had a brother Walter, and found 2 birth records in Zbrachlin that might fit.
Antoni married in this parish. When I found Marianna's birth record it turned out that she was also born in the same place, so this seemed quite believable.
Later Trish published the Declaration of intention, and both the year and the place did not match. And all other dates were correct. His date of death can also give a probable year of birth.
We have to wait until I get an answer about Antonis and Marianna's wedding in 1911.

Barb, James, Trish and Marcel,
Thank you for everything. I was born in 1958, but my babcia had already passed. Due to the fact my father, Thaddeus/Tadeus and my mother moved to California in 1955, I did not grow up near my extended family in Illinois and Indiana but fortunately I met my dzia dzia several times and have become the "link" for all extended family (cousins, etc) since the passing of my mother in 2022. My father was the youngest of Antoni and Maryanna's children. My aunt Josephine (born in Stannowo) was almost 13 years older than my father.
I am very interested in knowing all I can about the lives of my ancestors. I feel drawn to Poland, and my son, has visited Poland a couple of times and hopes to take me there at some point so I can walk the streets of my intrepid ancestors.
Any records, anecdotes, no matter how insignificant will help me build that bridge to my past and allow me to pass on this rich personal history to my two children and any grandchildren that might come along. Unfortunately, my father's generation have all passed (my father at 61 due to a childhood heart condition) and my cousins are in their late 70's and mid-80's so time is marching on. I am sharing everything I find on our grandparents with them. So based on documents, I know my dzia dzia was born November 21 1887 or 1888 or 1889. Birth records, baptismal, marriage, death, etc...will help with both my personal history and my desire to achieve Polish citizenship.
For some reason, since 2018, when I began this deep dive into my paternal past, it is as if I am being encouraged by those loved ones that have gone before to seek, find and share. When I encounter early 1900 emigrants in movies, books,etc..I feel a closeness to their plights. I can't explain it.
I cannot thank you enough for all your help with this. I will continue on this and feel so grateful for all you as you assist me on this personal quest.

Most of the documents are written in Russian, a few in Polish. I loaded what I found on my PC, so if you want I can send it to you.

Oh Barb!
This is like getting a hug from my babcia and all that came before. I have tears on my cheeks as I respond to this. I cannot wait to share this with my cousins and my children. You're an angel.

Barb,
Yes, please pass on anything you have found. I can private message you my private email if you think that is best but this site is fine as well, perhaps? I have almost everything I can find on USA ancestry sites, but for whatever reason, hit a wall once I cross over to Polish sites which is why I have spend over $3000 over the last few years asking for assistance from Polish archivists, but they have not provided much. You have given me more in the last couple of days than anything they have provided.

Post subject: Stannowo Poland and Grandparents/History
I was wondering if anyone has a recommendation for a site to find out what was happening/history in the area of Poland that my grandparents came from. I recently found out that my babcia's parents both died in the same year and was wondering if there was a plague, massive crop failures, storms, or????? In addition to their deaths, so close together, my grandparents emigrated soon after. (I keep imaging the end scene from Fiddler on the Roof where groups were forced to leave).
As I find out more about my Polish heritage, the search becomes more personal and I wonder about all the individuals and their lives.

Hello,
I started looking for Antoni's ancestors. I have found quite a few, but this week I am very busy at work. Will send you what I found on Friday or Saturday. Unfortunately in the church books from the area your ancestors come from the cause of death is not stated.

Hello,
Here are Antoni's 7 siblings including Władysław (Walter) mentioned in your first post. Walter was the oldest. Surnames for the children are written Urbański or Urbańczyk. Spouses are also mentioned.
I will send the rest of the Urbanski family this evening.
